SIST ETS 300 399-2 E1:2003 is the Slovenian version of ETS 300 399-2 Edition 1 from ETSI. It specifies the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) frame relay bearer service, focusing on the network-specific aspects of how the service is offered on ISDN. It is aimed at people who need to specify, implement, or operate ISDN frame relay access and signaling.

What does SIST ETS 300 399-2 E1:2003 specify?

SIST ETS 300 399-2 E1:2003 specifies the network-specific aspects of the frame relay service when it is offered on an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). The document calls this the frame relay bearer service and says it applies to ISDNs that offer that service.

The standard is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, definitions, abbreviations, the general definition, service description, service classes, procedures, charging, interworking, attributes and values, dynamic description, and numbering plan. Annex A is an informative bibliography.

What are the key requirements of SIST ETS 300 399-2 E1:2003?

SIST ETS 300 399-2 E1:2003 defines the service at the network level rather than as a test or installation document. The most important points are the service model, the service classes, the access and signaling choices, and the numbering plan rules.

Service model

  • The service carries **Core Service Data Unit (CSDU)**s in both directions between S or T reference points.
  • Routing uses a local Data Link Connection Identifier (DLCI) label, and the order of data units is preserved per DLCI.
  • The interface can support multiple on-demand and/or permanent virtual circuits to different destinations.
  • In practice, this tells you the service is connection-oriented at the logical level and that ordering matters per connection.

Service classes and access

  • Clause 7 uses service classes for D-channel, B-channel, or multirate channel operation, and not every class must be offered on every channel.
  • The classes cover permanent and on-demand cases, with variants that use ITU-T Recommendation Q.933 annex A or annex B connection monitoring.
  • The service associations are tied to CCITT Recommendation E.164 numbers or groups of numbers on the interface.
  • In practice, the network operator chooses which class combinations to offer, and a customer may see different service behavior on different access numbers.

Procedures, charging, and interworking

  • Clause 8 says the procedures from ETS 300 399-1 apply, with a maximum information field size of 260 octets when the D-channel is used.
  • Clauses 9 and 10 point to ETS 300 399-1 for charging capabilities and interworking.
  • In practice, implementers must align this part with the common frame relay service definition in Part 1 and respect the smaller D-channel payload limit.

Attributes and numbering

  • Table 2 sets the service attributes: frame transfer mode, unrestricted information transfer capability, service data unit integrity, bi-directional symmetric operation, and point-to-point configuration.
  • It also lists access-channel and protocol options for signaling and information transfer, including I.430, I.431, Q.922, Q.921, Q.931, and Q.933 in the combinations shown.
  • Table 3 links service classes to numbering plans, using CCITT Recommendation E.164 and, for some cases, CCITT Recommendation X.121.
  • In practice, this is the part you use to match the service to the access technology and dialing or addressing plan.

What terms does SIST ETS 300 399-2 E1:2003 define?

  • Bearer service - the ISDN service category used to transport user information, referenced through CCITT Recommendation I.112.
  • Core Service Data Unit (CSDU) - the data unit transferred by the frame relay bearer service between reference points.
  • Data Link Connection Identifier (DLCI) - the local label used to route frame relay data units through the network.
  • Quality of Service (QoS) - the service quality view used for the attributes in Table 2.
  • Service Data Unit (SDU) - the unit of user data that must be kept intact at the service boundary.
  • Network Termination 2 (NT2) - the ISDN network termination arrangement mentioned for access configuration.

Who uses SIST ETS 300 399-2 E1:2003?

SIST ETS 300 399-2 E1:2003 is used by ISDN service providers, network engineers, equipment vendors, and interoperability test labs. It helps them define how frame relay bearer service behaves on an ISDN access, which signaling and numbering options apply, and which service classes are supported.

It is also relevant for buyers and technical specifiers who need to verify that an access service supports the required frame relay mode, channel type, and numbering plan.

Which standards are used with SIST ETS 300 399-2 E1:2003?

  • ETS 300 399-1 - provides the common frame relay service description that this part complements.
  • CCITT Recommendation E.164 - provides the ISDN numbering plan used in several service classes.
  • ITU-T Recommendation I.430 - provides the basic rate user-network interface layer 1 specification.
  • ITU-T Recommendation I.431 - provides the primary rate user-network interface layer 1 specification.
  • CCITT Recommendation Q.922 - provides the ISDN data link layer specification for frame mode bearer services.
  • ITU-T Recommendation Q.933 - provides the layer 3 signaling specification for frame mode bearer service.
  • CCITT Recommendation X.121 - provides the international numbering plan for public data networks.
  • CCITT Recommendation I.112 - provides the ISDN vocabulary used for the term bearer service.

What does the SIST ETS 300 399-2 E1:2003 document contain?

The document centers on service definition, not on laboratory test methods. It contains one service class table, one attribute table, and one numbering-plan table that are used to specify how the service is offered and addressed.

Annex A is an informative bibliography. The rest of the document organizes the service description, procedures, interworking, and attribute definitions needed for implementation and service planning.
