Overview
ISO 12619-15:2017 is an international standard developed by ISO that specifies the tests and requirements for filters used in fuel system components of road vehicles powered by compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blends. It applies to motor vehicles as defined in ISO 3833 and addresses vehicles using CGH2 fuel compliant with ISO 14687-1 or ISO 14687-2, as well as hydrogen/natural gas blends meeting ISO 15403-1 and ISO/TR 15403-2 specifications.
This standard excludes components such as liquefied hydrogen fuel systems, fuel containers, stationary engines, electronic fuel management, refuelling receptacles, and fuel cell vehicles. It also highlights that pressure references are gauge pressures unless otherwise specified.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: Focuses on filters specifically designed for CGH2 and hydrogen/natural gas blend fuel systems in road vehicles.
- Marking Requirements: Filters must be clearly marked to enable traceability, including manufacturer details, model numbers, temperature range, flow direction, fuel type, certification symbols, and reference to ISO 12619-15:2017.
- Construction and Assembly: Filters must comply with general guidelines and test procedures outlined in ISO 12619-1 and ISO 12619-2, including considerations for material conductivity when non-conductive materials are used.
- Testing Procedures: Essential tests ensure the filter's safety, durability, and operational reliability including:
- Hydrostatic Strength Test: Ensures resistance to pressures 2.5 times above working pressure.
- Continued Operation Test: Filters must withstand 20,000 operational cycles without degradation.
- Vibration Resistance Test: Validates performance under dynamic stress, simulating real operational vibrations (1.5g acceleration across three orthogonal axes, frequencies between 10 Hz and 500 Hz).
All filters must pass leakage and strength tests post-testing to verify structural integrity and leak prevention.
Applications
ISO 12619-15:2017 is critical for manufacturers, engineers, and quality assurance specialists involved in the design, production, and maintenance of hydrogen fuel systems in:
- Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles: Ensuring safe filtration of CGH2 and hydrogen/natural gas blends fuels.
- Compressed Gas Fuel Systems: Protection against contaminants and impurities in CGH2 fuel lines.
- Clean Energy Automotive Components: Supporting the development of robust, durable fuel system filters that comply with international safety and performance requirements.
By adhering to this standard, organizations improve fuel system reliability and safety, contributing to the broader adoption of hydrogen fuel technologies in the automotive industry.
Related Standards
Key ISO standards associated with ISO 12619-15:2017 include:
- ISO 12619-1: General requirements and definitions for CGH2 and hydrogen/natural gas blend fuel system components.
- ISO 12619-2: Performance criteria and test methods for these fuel system components.
- ISO 3833: Vehicle types, terms, and definitions.
