As a result of the combination of higher strength and improved formability, it is possible to obtain savings in mass along with better weldability. The product is intended for applications where parts are to be fabricated requiring better formability than is provided by normal high-yield-strength steel sheet. The steel sheet is produced in a number of grade designations designed to be compatible with differing application requirements. ISO 20805:2017 does not apply to - steels intended for boilers or pressure vessels, - steels designated as commercial quality, drawing quality or structural quality, - steels rolled to cold-reduced products, - steels designated as weathering steels, having increased atmospheric corrosion resistance, or - those products rolled on a plate mill.

Overview

ISO 20805:2017 specifies requirements for hot‑rolled steel sheet in coils of higher yield strength with improved formability and heavy thickness for cold forming. It covers continuous hot‑rolled products (commonly 6–25 mm thick and widths ≥600 mm) supplied generally in the as‑delivered (AR) or descaled condition. The standard enables optimized designs where higher strength combined with better formability delivers mass savings and improved weldability for cold‑formed fabricated parts.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and exclusions: Applies to hot‑rolled coils for cold forming; excludes steels for boilers/pressure vessels, commercial/drawing/structural qualities, cold‑reduced products, weathering steels, and plate‑mill products.
  • Chemical composition: Defines heat‑analysis limits (e.g., C ≤ 0.15%, Mn ≤ 1.65%, P ≤ 0.025%, S ≤ 0.030%) and requires microalloying elements (V, Ti, Nb) at minimum levels (e.g., ≥ 0.005%) to achieve higher strength and formability. Limits on Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo and combined sums are specified.
  • Mechanical properties: Specifies grade designations with minimum yield and tensile strength levels and elongation requirements that vary with thickness - enabling selection of grades (e.g., 325–560 MPa yield classes) appropriate to application needs.
  • Manufacture and testing: Covers steelmaking discretion, inclusion control options, heat and product analysis procedures, sampling and tensile/impact testing per referenced methods.
  • Dimensional, shape and coil tolerances: Defines allowable thickness, width and shape tolerances for coils and slit products.
  • Surface condition and welding: Addresses AR and descaled surfaces, oiling, and notes weldability considerations (scale removal may be needed depending on welding method).
  • Inspection and marking: Includes requirements for inspection, acceptance, coil size, marking and purchaser information.

Applications and practical value

  • Ideal for manufacturers and designers of cold‑formed structural components, automotive body or chassis parts, agricultural machinery, and other fabricated parts where mass reduction, higher yield strength, and improved formability are required.
  • Useful for specifications where better weldability and controlled inclusion morphology (for formability) are important.
  • Facilitates material selection, supplier communication and quality control for rolled‑coil suppliers, steel mills, fabricators, OEMs and procurement teams.

Who should use ISO 20805:2017

  • Steel producers and mills issuing hot‑rolled coil products
  • Engineers and designers specifying materials for cold forming
  • Quality and inspection personnel verifying chemical and mechanical conformity
  • Procurement and standards teams preparing purchase orders and acceptance criteria

ISO 20805:2017 is a standard that applies to hot-rolled steel sheet in coils with higher yield strength and improved formability for cold forming. This steel can be treated for inclusion control and is typically used as-delivered. Its combination of strength and formability allows for mass savings and improved weldability. The product is intended for applications that require better formability than regular high-yield-strength steel sheet. The steel sheet is available in various grade designations to meet different application requirements. ISO 20805:2017 does not cover steels for boilers or pressure vessels, commercial quality or structural quality steels, cold-reduced products, weathering steels with increased corrosion resistance, or products rolled on a plate mill.
