Thermal insulating materials for building applications - Determination of organic content
ISO 29771:2008 specifies the equipment and procedures for determining the organic content of thermal insulating materials. The method is aimed at determining the organic content for products that are inorganic, i.e. products containing a low percentage of organic compounds, either unfaced products or the insulating material of a faced product. ISO 29771:2008 is not applicable for the determination of organic content in the presence of water of hydration and/or combined carbonate, sulfate, etc. ISO 29771:2008 is not applicable for the determination of organic content of adhesives, facings and/or coatings.

Overview
ISO 29771:2008 - "Thermal insulating materials for building applications - Determination of organic content" - specifies the equipment, conditioning and test procedures for measuring the organic content of mainly inorganic thermal insulating materials. The method determines organic content by mass loss on heating: specimens are dried, weighed, heated to burn off organics (typically in a furnace at 500 ± 20 °C), cooled in a desiccator and re‑weighed until constant mass is reached. Results are expressed as a percent mass fraction (organic content).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and limits
- Intended for products that are essentially inorganic (low organic fraction), either unfaced or the insulating core of faced products.
- Not applicable where water of hydration or combined carbonates/sulfates are present, and not for adhesives, facings or coatings.
- Principle
- Organic content determined as mass loss after controlled drying and high‑temperature ignition (loss on ignition).
- Apparatus
- Analytical balance (capable to 0.001 g), ventilated oven (105 ± 5 °C or as specified), ventilated furnace (500 ± 20 °C or as specified), inert preheated crucibles/trays, desiccator.
- Specimen preparation
- Minimum specimen mass 10–200 g; thickness equal to original product thickness; at least eight pieces sampled across product surface (typical test uses ≥5 specimens unless product standard specifies otherwise).
- Remove facings/coatings before sampling; condition specimens by drying to constant mass.
- Procedure & calculation
- Weigh container, weigh container + dried specimen, heat in furnace until organics are burned off, cool and re‑weigh; repeat heating/cooling until mass is constant. Organic content is calculated from the mass loss relative to specimen mass (expressed as %).
- Annex A
- Provides a simplified method suitable for factory production control (continuous weighing arrangement, no pre‑conditioning if specimens are taken directly from the production line).
- Notes
- This edition does not include a formal statement on measurement accuracy.
- Can be used to help verify compliance with EN 13501‑1 for Euroclass A1 classification based on organic content thresholds.
Applications and users
- Who uses it
- Test laboratories, insulation manufacturers, quality control teams, certification bodies, building product R&D and regulatory compliance officers.
- Practical uses
- Routine factory production control and batch testing (using simplified method).
- Product conformity testing for fire classification and regulatory documentation.
- Material characterization during product development and failure analysis.
Related standards
- ISO 29771 is part of a family of ISO standards for thermal insulating products (e.g., ISO 29465, ISO 29466, ISO 29470, ISO 29770). It complements other test methods for dimensional, mechanical and moisture properties used in building insulation testing.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

ISO 29771 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 163, Thermal performance and energy use in the
built environment, Subcommittee SC 1, Test and measurement methods.
