ISO/IEC 20009-4:2017/Amd 1:2026 is an ISO/IEC amendment to Part 4 of the ISO/IEC 20009 series on anonymous entity authentication. It updates the weak-secret mechanisms used for registration, anonymous authentication, and revocation, so implementers can align existing password-based authentication schemes with the revised protocol text.
What does ISO/IEC 20009-4:2017/Amd 1:2026 specify?
ISO/IEC 20009-4:2017/Amd 1:2026 specifies changes to the existing Part 4 text for anonymous entity authentication based on weak secrets. The amendment revises the protocol building blocks, the registration and revocation procedures, and the storage-extra PAEA mechanisms in Clauses 5, 6 and 7.
The document is organized as targeted replacements and insertions in Clause 2, Clause 4.2, Clauses 5.3 and 5.4, Clauses 6.2 and 6.3, Clause 7, Annex A and the bibliography. In practice, that means it is meant to be read together with ISO/IEC 20009-4:2017, not as a standalone reissue of the whole part.
What are the key requirements of ISO/IEC 20009-4:2017/Amd 1:2026?
Cryptographic references and conversion primitives
- Clause 2 adds ISO/IEC 14888-2, ISO/IEC 14888-3 and ISO/IEC 18033-2 as normative references. This matters because the revised mechanisms rely on standard signature and asymmetric-cipher building blocks rather than ad hoc conversions.
- Clause 4.2 replaces the definitions of EC2OSP, FE2OSP, BS2IP and GE2OSP. In practice, implementers must use the specified octet-string and integer conversion behavior so that protocol messages are encoded consistently across implementations.
Registration, setup and stored credentials
- Clause 5.3 rewrites the setup, user registration and user revocation text for the password-file model. The server maintains a private password file (PWF) of identifier and password-verification-data pairs, while the user registration step can be non-interactive only when the PWF is empty.
- Clause 5.4 rewrites the alternative registration model in which the server issues a password wrapped credential. That credential can be stored in a location accessible to the user, which affects deployment choices such as portable storage or public directories.
- The note in Clauses 5.3 and 5.4 says anonymous authentication normally includes mutual authentication and key exchange, but applications may use a reduced form. That gives implementers room to choose the level of peer authentication they actually need.
Revocation and group handling
- Clause 6.2.4 states that the SKI mechanism supports two revocation modes: removing a user from selected user groups, or removing the user from the PWF. Practically, this means a system can revoke group membership without always deleting the user from every stored record.
- Clause 6.3.4 updates the deletion step so the relevant PWF entry is removed and the user is removed from the user group. This keeps the password file and the group state aligned after revocation.
- Clause 7.2.5 explains that, for the YZW mechanism, user revocation is credential revocation and is handled with a dynamic accumulator. The witness values must be updated whenever the accumulator changes, so revocation has a direct operational impact on all registered users.
The new ZYHW mechanism
- Clause 7.1 adds the ZYHW mechanism as a storage-extra PAEA mechanism alongside YZW.
- Clause 7.3 requires a digital signature mechanism from ISO/IEC 14888-2 or ISO/IEC 14888-3 and collision-resistant hash functions. This is the cryptographic base for the new registration, authentication and revocation flow.
- Clauses 7.3.3 to 7.3.5 define server-issued credentials, a password wrapped credential, anonymous authentication with optional session-key establishment, and witness-based revocation. In practice, the user must present a proof that is checked against the current revocation state before the server accepts the authentication.
- Annex A adds a new OID entry for zyhw-mechanism. That matters for implementations that need a registered object identifier in protocol profiles or supporting documents.
What terms does ISO/IEC 20009-4:2017/Amd 1:2026 define?
- Password file (PWF) - the server’s private set of ordered pairs containing each user’s distinguishing identifier and password verification data.
- Password wrapped credential - the user-held credential produced during registration and stored in a place the user can access later.
- Credential revocation list (CRL) - the server-maintained list that records revoked credentials or revoked-user entries.
- Witness - the value issued to a registered user and later updated when the CRL changes.
- Dynamic accumulator - a mechanism that compresses a large set of values into one accumulator while supporting updates and witness consistency.
- Collision-resistant hash function - a hash function used to bind protocol messages so that different inputs should not lead to the same digest.
- Digital signature mechanism - the signature scheme used in ZYHW for signing and verifying protocol messages.
Who uses ISO/IEC 20009-4:2017/Amd 1:2026?
ISO/IEC 20009-4:2017/Amd 1:2026 is used by security protocol designers, software implementers, system architects and conformance or review teams working on anonymous password authentication. It is relevant in information technology, cybersecurity and privacy-protection work where anonymous client authentication, revocation handling and optional key exchange need to be specified clearly.
What changed in ISO/IEC 20009-4:2017/Amd 1:2026 from the previous edition?
ISO/IEC 20009-4:2017/Amd 1:2026 is Amendment 1 to ISO/IEC 20009-4:2017. It adds new normative references, revises conversion primitives, rewrites setup and registration text, clarifies revocation behavior, introduces the ZYHW mechanism, and adds the corresponding Annex A OID entry and bibliography reference.
Which standards are used with ISO/IEC 20009-4:2017/Amd 1:2026?
- ISO/IEC 14888-2 - provides integer-factorization-based digital signature mechanisms used by the ZYHW requirements.
- ISO/IEC 14888-3 - provides discrete-logarithm-based digital signature mechanisms used by the ZYHW requirements.
- ISO/IEC 18033-2 - provides asymmetric-cipher material and the referenced conversion primitives used in Clause 4.2.
What does the ISO/IEC 20009-4:2017/Amd 1:2026 document contain?
The amendment contains replacement text for protocol setup, user registration, user revocation and anonymous authentication steps. It also contains witness-based revocation logic, dynamic-accumulator handling, and the acceptance checks used by the YZW and ZYHW mechanisms.
The document includes the procedural definitions needed to implement or review these mechanisms, including the use of public parameters, server secret keys, PWF handling, CRL handling and optional session-key derivation. Annex A adds the OID line for zyhw-mechanism, and the bibliography adds the reference for the ZYHW-based approach.
