Plain bearings - Requirements and guidance on backings for thick-walled multilayer bearings

This document gives requirements and guidance to obtain the optimum bond between backing and bearing metal for thick-walled multilayer plain bearings. This optimum bond depends on the chemical composition, the state of stress, the structural arrangement and the machining of the bond surface of the backings. NOTE Control of the manufacturing process is an important requirement to achieve an optimum bond between backing material and bearing metal.

Overview

ISO 6280:2018 - Plain bearings: Requirements and guidance on backings for thick-walled multilayer bearings - specifies requirements and practical guidance to achieve an optimum bond between the backing and the bearing metal in thick-walled, multilayer plain bearings. The quality of the bond depends on backing material chemistry, stress state, structural arrangement and the machining of the bond surface. The standard emphasizes process control during manufacture to ensure reliable bonding and bearing performance.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Backing materials: Acceptable backings include steel and cast steel, cast iron (lamellar or spheroidal graphite) and cast copper alloys. Examples of copper alloys: CuSn10, CuPb5Sn5Zn5.
  • Steel / cast steel:
    • Backings should be heat-treated for normalizing and stress relieving before lining.
    • Typical element contents for bonding: C < 0.25%, Cr ≤ 1.1%, Ni < 0.5%, Mn ≤ 1.3% (mass fractions).
    • For backing thickness ≥ 40 mm the hydrogen content shall be ≤ 1.7 ppm; controlled processes must be used to reduce hydrogen to avoid operational issues.
  • Cast iron:
    • Microstructure should be ferritic or largely ferritic.
    • Typical element limits: Si < 2.5%, P < 1.2%, C < 3.35% (mass fractions).
    • Dovetailed grooves may be used on the bond surface for mechanical anchoring when casting iron is used as backing.
  • Machining of bond surface:
    • Maximum surface roughness: R = 8 µm.
    • Final machining should be performed without cutting fluids, unless a degreasing process is subsequently applied prior to metallization.
  • Administrative notes: ISO 6280:2018 contains no normative references and replaces the 1981 edition. It was prepared by ISO/TC 123, Plain bearings, SC 2.

Applications

ISO 6280:2018 is directly applicable to the design, manufacture and quality control of thick-walled multilayer plain bearings used in rotating and sliding machinery where reliable lining-to-backing bonding is critical. Typical application areas include:

  • Heavy machinery and industrial equipment
  • Engine and turbine bushings
  • Marine and railway bearing systems
  • Hydraulic and rolling equipment requiring multilayer bearing constructions

Who should use this standard

  • Design engineers and bearing manufacturers specifying backing materials and bonding processes
  • Metallurgists and process engineers controlling heat treatment and hydrogen levels
  • Quality assurance, procurement and maintenance personnel responsible for supplier conformance and bearing reliability
