ISO 2974:2026, published by ISO, specifies the dimensional requirements for 60° concave cones used as end-connections on high-pressure fuel injection equipment for diesel (compression-ignition) engines. It is written for injectors, common rails, distribution blocks, injection pumps, high-pressure supply pumps, and the matching high-pressure pipe assemblies that have to seal under very high injection pressure.
What does ISO 2974:2026 specify?
ISO 2974:2026 covers externally threaded 60° concave cones for high-pressure fuel injection components and the pipe assemblies that mate with them. The scope limits use to pipe assemblies with tube outside diameters up to 12 mm for integral concave cones and up to 9 mm for fabricated concave cones.
The document is organized into six clauses:
- Clause 1 - Scope
- Clause 2 - Normative references
- Clause 3 - Terms and definitions
- Clause 4 - Requirements
- Clause 5 - Designation
- Clause 6 - Figures and tables
Clause 6 contains the figures and tables for the two cone types, together with the assembly views that show how the cone, nut, pipe end and any inserted device fit together in practice.
What are the key requirements of ISO 2974:2026?
Geometry, dimensions and gauges
ISO 2974:2026 requires the 60° concave cone and its relationship to the external thread to match the relevant figure for the cone type, with the dimensions and tolerances given in Table 1 for integral cones and Table 2 for fabricated cones. Unspecified details are left to the manufacturer, so the standard fixes the critical sealing geometry while allowing non-critical design choices.
For integral cones, the document allows variation at the smaller end of the cone as shown in Figure 3. That matters because it gives some design flexibility without changing the sealing interface.
The external thread may be made with or without undercut, but the GO-gauge for the thread shall screw up to the plane defined by dimension T. In practice, this is the check that the thread is usable for assembly.
Surface finish, undercut and assembly fit
The figures state that surface roughness is to be indicated according to ISO 21920-1, and any undercut shall follow ISO 3508. The pipe-end assembly figures also show the basic relationships between the nut, the sealing area, the cone and any inserted device such as a throttle or edge filter.
The pipe-end bore entrance configuration shall be chosen so that, after final assembly, the pipe inside diameter is not reduced in accordance with ISO 13296. That means the connection must not choke the flow path during assembly.
Materials and sealing performance
ISO 2974:2026 says the material and heat treatment shall be selected according to intended use. For tightness at the first assembly and during repeated assembly, plastic deformation has to occur at the sealing face of the high-pressure pipe.
The cone should be at least 50 HV harder than the pipe connection end, and this hardness relationship has to be proven to maintain tightness over the product’s useful life. In practice, this is the material control that supports repeatable sealing under high pressure.
Designation
A conforming cone is designated by the cone type, a reference to ISO 2974, the shape for integral cones, the tube outside diameter, and the thread designation in accordance with ISO 261. The designation format is what engineers and buyers use on drawings, specifications and orders so the correct geometry is identified unambiguously.
What terms does ISO 2974:2026 define?
- Integral concave cone - a concave cone in which the sealing cone and the thread are part of the same component.
- Fabricated concave cone - a concave cone in which the sealing cone and thread are separate before joining, for example by welding.
- Reference diameter (S) - the baseline diameter used to dimension the concave cone and the pipe end form.
- CR injectors - the common-rail injectors named in the scope as one of the component types covered.
- GO-gauge - the thread check gauge that has to screw up to the specified plane T.
- High-pressure fuel injection pipe assemblies - the pipe assemblies used with the cone connections on diesel fuel injection equipment.
Who uses ISO 2974:2026?
ISO 2974:2026 is used by designers and manufacturers of diesel fuel injection components, including injectors, common rails, distribution blocks, injection pumps and high-pressure supply pumps. It is also used by pipe-assembly manufacturers, quality teams, and buyers or specifiers who need to check thread form, cone geometry, tolerances, material condition and assembly compatibility.
In practice, users apply it when defining parts, checking drawings, setting gauges, approving suppliers, and verifying that the connection will seal reliably at very high fuel pressure.
What changed in ISO 2974:2026 from the previous edition?
ISO 2974:2026 cancels and replaces ISO 2974:2018. The document states three main changes:
- language inclusivity was improved
- a new thread option, M16 × 1,0, was added in Table 1
- the reference standard for roughness indication was updated to ISO 21920-1
Which standards are used with ISO 2974:2026?
ISO 2974:2026 cites these normative references:
- ISO 261 - provides the general plan for metric screw threads used in the thread designation
- ISO 21920-1 - provides the surface texture indication used for roughness on the figures
- ISO 3508 - defines thread run-outs for fasteners and is referenced for the undercut
- ISO 13296 - gives the general requirements and dimensions for high-pressure fuel injection pipe assemblies
The bibliography also points to vocabulary standards for fuel injection equipment, including ISO 7876-4 and ISO 7876-5, and to ISO 18418-1 as a related connector standard for gasoline engines.
What does the ISO 2974:2026 document contain?
ISO 2974:2026 contains figures for integral and fabricated 60° concave cones, with and without undercut, and figures showing the corresponding pipe end assemblies. It also contains tables of dimensions and tolerances for both cone types, including the thread options and reference dimensions used for design and inspection.
Clause 5 gives designation examples, which are useful for drawing calls, purchasing documents and part identification. Clause 4 ties the geometry to thread checking, surface roughness indication, material selection and sealing performance, so the document supports both design review and acceptance checks.

Introduction
To comply with recent exhaust gas regulations and fuel consumption regulations for internal combustion
engines, the fuel injection pressure of automobile diesel engines is generally 2 000 bar or more. Fuel injection
systems operating at pressures of approximately 2 700 bar are also being introduced to the market.
Since this fuel injection pressure is extremely high, the dimensions and specifications of the 60° concave
cones for high pressure fuel connections are standardized. This is to prevent fuel leaking from the joint or
other failures.
