Diesel engines — Clamp mounted CR fuel injectors — Mounting dimensions

This document specifies dimensional requirements for clamp mounted CR fuel injectors and their corresponding cylinder head features in diesel engines. According to the injector nozzle capnut, the clamp mounted CR fuel injectors can be divided into two types: Type A, where the nozzle capnut is straight (see Figure 4); Type B, where the nozzle capnut is stepped (see Figure 5). Each clamp mounted CR fuel injector type is subdivided by a series of different sizes. NOTE This differentiation corresponds to the relationship between the two guide diameters of the clamp mounted CR fuel injectors.

Overview

ISO 12251:2025 specifies mounting dimensions for clamp‑mounted common‑rail (CR) fuel injectors used in diesel engines. It defines the dimensional interface between injectors and cylinder heads to ensure correct fit, sealing and mechanical guidance. The standard covers two injector capnut styles - Type A (straight capnut) and Type B (stepped capnut) - and provides a series of size classifications for each type. ISO 12251 (FDIS stage, 2025‑09‑25) replaces the 2017 edition and includes updated figures, tables and added parameters such as sealing washer diameter (d6), washer thickness (s) and transition radius (R1).

Key topics

  • Clamp‑mounted CR fuel injectors: dimensional requirements for injector bodies, capnuts and nozzle shafts.
  • Two capnut types: Type A (straight) and Type B (stepped), each subdivided into multiple sizes based on guide diameters.
  • Injector guiding and overlap: upper and lower guide diameters, overlapping lengths and their relationship to cylinder head bores.
  • Concentricity of nozzle shaft (φt): measurement and tolerance concept relating the nozzle shaft axis to injector guide diameters to avoid interference with the cylinder head bore.
  • Sealing washer and transition radius: parameters such as washer outer diameter (d6), thickness (s) and the radius/transition R1 between bore and sealing face are specified or agreed between manufacturer and customer.
  • High‑pressure connector: must comply with ISO 2974 (60° female cone for high‑pressure fuel components).
  • Surface finish and tolerances: surface roughness referenced to ISO 21920‑1 and dimensional tolerances provided in the standard’s tables and figures.

Applications

Who uses ISO 12251:

  • Engine designers and OEMs: to specify injector‑to‑cylinder‑head interfaces and ensure interchangeability.
  • Injector manufacturers: to design clamp‑mounted CR injectors that fit standard cylinder head features and meet concentricity/tolerance requirements.
  • Cylinder‑head designers: to machine bores, transitions and sealing features consistent with injector guide and sealing dimensions.
  • Quality/control and test labs: to verify dimensional compliance, concentricity and assembly fit during production and incoming inspection.
  • Aftermarket and service: to select compatible replacement injectors and sealing components.

Practical benefits:

  • Ensures reliable sealing and guidance of high‑pressure CR injectors.
  • Reduces risk of nozzle shaft interference and fuel leakage.
  • Facilitates cross‑supplier compatibility and engine assembly consistency.

Related standards

  • ISO 2974 - High‑pressure 60° female cone for fuel injection components (connector requirements).

iv
Introduction
The mainstream of fuel injection system for diesel engine has shifted from P-L-N (pump-line-nozzle) and
unit injectors to CR fuel injection system.
The injector for CR fuel injection system has most of the functions for delicately injecting high pressure fuel
inside the injector, and since they are easily affected by distortion or deformation of the injector body, it is
necessary to pay close attention to the installation on the cylinder head.
This document provides design engineers with standard dimensions for installing the CR injector on the
cylinder head.
