Abstract

ISO 2974:2018 specifies the dimensional requirements of end-connections for high-pressure fuel injection equipment components, used on diesel (compression-ignition) engines. ISO 2974:2018 is applicable to externally threaded 60° female cones (see Figures 1, 2, 5, and 6) and intended for use with high-pressure fuel injection pipe assemblies with tube outside diameters of: - up to and including 12 mm for integral female cones (see Table 1); and - up to and including 9 mm for fabricated female cones (see Table 2). Details of the pipe connection ends referenced in this document are shown in ISO 13296.

ISO 2974 is an ISO standard for diesel engines that specifies the dimensional requirements of end-connections for high-pressure fuel injection equipment components. It covers externally threaded 60° concave cones used on fuel injectors, CR injectors, common rails, distribution blocks, injection pumps, and high-pressure supply pumps for compression-ignition engines.

What does ISO 2974 specify?

ISO 2974 specifies the cone geometry, thread relationship, dimensions, tolerances, designation format, and related assembly details for two kinds of 60° concave cone end-connections. It is organized around the main technical clauses for scope, references, terms, requirements, and designation, with figures and tables for the integral and fabricated types.

TypeWhat it covers
Integral concave coneExternally threaded 60° concave cones for high-pressure fuel injection pipe assemblies with tube outside diameters up to and including 12 mm; shown in Figures 1-4 and Table 1.
Fabricated concave coneExternally threaded 60° concave cones for high-pressure fuel injection pipe assemblies with tube outside diameters up to and including 9 mm; shown in Figures 5-7 and Table 2.

The document also points users to ISO 13296 for details of the pipe connection ends that mate with these cones.

What are the key requirements of ISO 2974?

ISO 2974 sets the minimum geometry and functional fit needed for high-pressure fuel joints to assemble correctly and seal under very high injection pressures. In practice, the standard is mainly about matching the cone, thread, and pipe end so the joint can be made, checked, and repeated without leakage.

Dimensions, tolerances, and cone types

Clause 4.1 requires the 60° concave cone and its relationship to the external thread to match the relevant figure for the cone type. For integral concave cones, the smaller-end variation shown in Figure 3 is acceptable.

Tables 1 and 2 provide the dimensions and tolerances for integral and fabricated cones. Unspecified details are left to the manufacturer, which gives some design freedom but only outside the controlled interface dimensions.

Thread fit and gauge checking

Clause 4.1 also states that the external thread may be with or without undercut. If an undercut is used, it shall comply with ISO 3508.

The external thread shall still accept the GO-gauge up to the plane identified by dimension T. In practice, this is the check that confirms the thread is usable and that the cone-end geometry has not interfered with assembly.

Materials and sealing performance

Clause 4.2 links material choice and heat treatment to the intended use. It also requires the sealing face of the high-pressure pipe to undergo the necessary plastic deformation during assembly so the joint remains tight for both initial and repeated assembly.

The concave cone should be at least 50 HV harder than the pipe connection end. That hardness relationship matters because the pipe end must deform in a controlled way to seal, while the cone remains stable over the product’s useful life.

Designation and identification

Clause 5 gives the designation format: the cone type, a reference to ISO 2974, the shape for integral cones, the tube outside diameter, and the thread designation in accordance with ISO 261.

This helps purchasers, drawing offices, and suppliers describe the same part in the same way, which reduces confusion when ordering or checking parts.

Surface finish, shape variants, and assemblies

Figures 1 and 5 require surface roughness to follow ISO 21920-1. Figure 3 gives the integral-cone shapes A, B, and C, and Shape C is used for inserted devices such as a throttle or edge filter.

Figures 4 and 7 show the basic pipe-end assembly relationships. They remind users that the pipe inside diameter shall not be reduced after final assembly.

What terms does ISO 2974 define?

  • 60° concave cone - The conical end-connection form used for the high-pressure fuel joint covered by ISO 2974.
  • Integral concave cone - A concave cone where the sealing cone and the thread are in the same part.
  • Fabricated concave cone - A concave cone where the sealing cone and the thread are separate parts before joining, for example by welding.
  • Reference diameter S - The baseline used to dimension the concave cone and the pipe end form.
  • GO-gauge - The thread gauge that shall screw up to the plane specified by dimension T.
  • CR injectors - Common rail injectors, one of the fuel-injection components named in the scope.

Who uses ISO 2974?

ISO 2974 is used by designers, suppliers, and buyers of diesel fuel injection hardware. It is relevant to people working on fuel injectors, CR injectors, common rails, distribution blocks, injection pumps, high-pressure supply pumps, and high-pressure fuel injection pipe assemblies.

Quality and manufacturing teams use it to check thread fit, cone dimensions, surface finish, material condition, and repeatable sealing performance. Buyers and engineering teams use it to specify compatible end-connections and to confirm that mating parts follow the same dimensional system.

What changed in ISO 2974 from the previous edition?

ISO 2974 is the tenth edition and it cancels and replaces ISO 2974:2018. The changes stated in the document are:

  • language inclusivity was improved
  • a new thread option M16 × 1.0 was added in Table 1
  • the reference standard for roughness indication was updated to ISO 21920-1

Which standards are used with ISO 2974?

StandardWhat it contributes
ISO 261General plan for metric screw threads and the thread designation used in ISO 2974.
ISO 21920-1Surface texture indication for the roughness callouts in the figures.
ISO 3508Thread run-outs for fasteners, used when an undercut is specified.
ISO 13296General requirements and dimensions for high-pressure fuel injection pipe assemblies and pipe connection ends.
ISO 7876-4Vocabulary for high-pressure pipes and end-connections.
ISO 7876-5Vocabulary for common rail fuel injection systems.
ISO 18418-1Related 60° concave cone connectors for gasoline-engine high-pressure liquid fuel supply connections.

What does the ISO 2974 document contain?

ISO 2974 contains figures for integral and fabricated 60° concave cones, including versions with and without undercut. It also contains figures for the basic pipe-end assemblies so users can see how the cone, nut, thread, and pipe end relate during assembly.

Tables 1 and 2 give the dimensional data and tolerances for the two cone types. Clause 5 gives designation examples, which are useful for drawings, procurement, and part identification.

The document also shows the shape variants for integral cones and identifies where inserted devices such as a throttle or edge filter may be used. Its technical content is aimed at design, manufacturing, and inspection of high-pressure fuel connections.
