Overview

The IEC 61156-5-1:2007 standard specifies symmetrical pair and quad cables designed for digital communications with transmission capabilities up to 1,000 MHz. These cables are primarily intended for horizontal floor wiring applications covering a wide range of categories including Class D, E, EA, F, and FA channels, corresponding to Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6A, Cat 7, and Cat 7A cable types as defined in ISO/IEC 11801 and ISO/IEC 24702. This second edition introduces updated technical requirements tailored for higher-performance cables supporting 10 GBase-T applications, reflecting advancements in digital communication infrastructure.

This standard serves as a blank detail specification which organizations, manufacturers, or end users can adapt to develop detailed cable specifications aligned with their specific needs and industry environments, including recommendations for industrial environment severities.

Key Topics

  • Symmetrical pair/quad cables: Cable design focused on twisted pair or quad configurations for robust performance.
  • Transmission frequency up to 1000 MHz: Support for high-speed data transfer, suitable for modern networking requirements, including 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
  • Horizontal floor wiring: Targeted use in building infrastructure for horizontal cable runs connecting workstations to communication closets.
  • Categories supported: Covers Cat 5e through Cat 7A, aligning with established ISO/IEC cabling classes.
  • Environmental classification: Incorporates MICE classification (Mechanical, Ingress, Climatic, Electromagnetic) derived from ISO/IEC 24702, ensuring cables meet industrial environmental challenges.
  • Technical performance criteria: Detailed requirements for electrical, transmission, mechanical, and environmental characteristics, including conductor resistance, insulation resistance, crosstalk, attenuation, bending radius, and temperature ranges.
  • Updated requirements for 10 GBase-T: Adaptations for higher bandwidth and signal integrity in Cat 6A and Cat 7A cables.
  • Blank detail specification format: Provides a template outlining cable description, materials, construction, electrical and mechanical test values, temperature parameters, and other relevant details.

Applications

IEC 61156-5-1:2007 cables are essential for:

Blank detail specification
1 Scope
This part of IEC 61156 describes symmetrical pair/quad cables intended for horizontal floor cabling
in class D, E, E , F and F channels (Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6 , Cat 7, Cat 7 ) as defined in ISO/IEC
A A A A
11801 and ISO/IEC 24702.
NOTE Cabling for various severities of industrial environments is specified in ISO/IEC 24702. Environmental
classifications are presented in ISO/IEC 24702 with three levels of severity in four areas: mechanical, ingress, climatic,
and electromagnetic; thus, in tabular form, they are referred to as the “MICE table”.
This blank detail specification includes additional recommended environmental characteristics and
severities, which are derived from the environmental classifications that are specified for cabling
for industrial environments.
