Overview

ISO/IEC 14763-2:2012/AMD1:2015 is an important amendment to the international standard focusing on information technology for the implementation and operation of customer premises cabling-specifically Part 2, which covers planning and installation. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this amendment integrates automated infrastructure management (AIM) systems within cabling management and enhances the operational administration of IT infrastructure cabling.

This standard provides updated definitions, system requirements, and recommended practices to optimize cabling network management through automation, improving accuracy and efficiency. It is essential for professionals involved in the deployment, management, and maintenance of structured cabling systems in commercial and institutional environments.

Key Topics

  • Automated Infrastructure Management (AIM) Systems
Introduces AIM systems as integrated hardware and software solutions that automatically detect cord insertions/removals and document cabling infrastructure status. This improves management by providing real-time updates and data exchange capabilities.

  • Discoverable Equipment
Defines equipment with network addresses, allowing AIM systems to detect and document connected network devices automatically, enhancing network visibility and maintenance.

  • Core Functions of AIM Systems
Includes automatic detection of connectivity between AIM-enabled panel ports and equipment, recording and monitoring connection/disconnection events, and managing physical location data of network elements.

  • Operational Administration Systems
Focuses on automating records to reduce operational complexity and manual errors. Provides tools to manage work orders related to cabling tasks, track historical events, and generate reports on infrastructure status.

  • System Requirements & Usage
Establishes integrity and operational discipline requirements for AIM systems, including auditing regimens to ensure ongoing accuracy and reliability of documented data.

  • Annex H – Normative Guidance on AIM
Specifies core and auxiliary features of AIM systems, including user controls for alerts, graphical connectivity views, work order management, and error detection.

Applications

  • Enterprise Network Infrastructure Management
Enables IT managers and facilities teams to monitor and control complex network cabling systems automatically, reducing downtime and maintenance costs.

  • Data Centers and Telecommunications Rooms
Supports automated tracking of cable connections and network equipment, improving troubleshooting efficiency and asset management.

  • Remote Site Administration
Facilitates remote monitoring and management of cabling infrastructure, especially where specialized staff is limited.

  • Work Order Management and Auditing
Streamlines cabling-related tasks, creating clear histories of changes, and ensuring compliance with operational policies through automated updates and alerts.

  • Integration with IT and Building Management Systems
Enables enhanced data exchange between AIM systems and other operational support or facility management software for comprehensive infrastructure oversight.

Related Standards

  • ISO/IEC 18598 – Automated infrastructure management (AIM) systems – Requirements, data exchange, and applications: Complements ISO/IEC 14763-2 by defining detailed AIM specifications.

  • ISO/IEC 14763-2:2012 – The base standard for planning and installation of customer premises cabling.

  • IEC 81346-2 – Reference for structured classification and designation of cabling components.

Summary

ISO/IEC 14763-2:2012/AMD1:2015 amendment greatly enhances the framework for planning and installation of customer premises cabling by incorporating automated infrastructure management systems. This development empowers organizations with improved accuracy, operational efficiency, and effective cabling infrastructure management, essential for modern information technology environments. Adopting these standards supports better network reliability, eases maintenance challenges, and advances integration with IT service management practices.
