Overview

IEC 60072-3:2026 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the dimensions and output series for small built-in rotating electrical machines. This document, titled "Rotating electrical machines - Dimensions and output series - Part 3: Small built-in motors - Flange numbers BF10 to BF50," focuses on machines with a flange pitch circle diameter between 10 mm and 50 mm. The standard provides comprehensive tables and detailed guidance on fixing dimensions, shaft extension dimensions, and their respective tolerances, enabling consistency and interoperability in small built-in electric motor designs.

This second edition of IEC 60072-3 updates and replaces the previous edition from 1994, offering clarified scope and improved technical accuracy for industry professionals involved in electric motor specification, design, and manufacturing.

Key Topics

  • Flange Designation and Dimensions: Defines standard flange numbers (BF10 to BF50) and assigns specific dimension ranges for each to support harmonized engineering practices.
  • Fixing Dimensions: Offers precise values for features such as pitch circle diameters, fixing holes, and spigot diameters, ensuring compatibility across applications.
  • Shaft Extension and Tolerances: Details required shaft extension dimensions, including lengths, diameters, and associated tolerances using internationally recognized standards.
  • Symbols and Notation: Utilizes standardized dimensional symbols and sketches to foster clear communication between manufacturers, suppliers, and engineers.
  • Alignment with ISO Tolerances: References ISO 286-2 for shaft and hole tolerances, facilitating global alignment on geometric product specifications.

Applications

IEC 60072-3:2026 is highly relevant across a variety of industries and engineering environments that utilize small built-in motors, especially where precision mounting and consistent performance are essential. Typical applications include:

  • Industrial Automation: Integration of small motors into compact machinery, servo drives, and robotic systems.
  • Consumer Electronics: Use in devices requiring high-precision miniature motors, such as home appliances and audio equipment.
  • Medical Equipment: Standardization of built-in motors for compact medical devices, supporting ease of replacement and maintenance.
  • Automotive and Transportation: Deployment in vehicle subsystems requiring space-saving electric motor solutions with standardized mounting flanges.
  • OEM and Component Manufacturing: Ensures that original equipment manufacturers and suppliers can produce and source compatible motors worldwide, reducing design complexity and inventory variation.

By standardizing key dimensions and tolerances, IEC 60072-3:2026 promotes efficiency in production, enables interoperability, and supports cost savings through the interchangeability of components.

Related Standards

For comprehensive electric motor design and specification, consider the following related standards:

  • IEC 60072 Series: Other parts in this series address different ranges of output, shaft height, and flange dimensions.
  • ISO 286-2: Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) - ISO code system for tolerances on linear sizes - offers tables for standard tolerance classes and limit deviations for holes and shafts.
  • IEC 60034: Rotating electrical machines - General requirements for motor performance and safety.
  • IEC Electropedia: The IEC online terminology platform provides authoritative definitions of technical terms cited in standards for rotating electrical machines.

IEC 60072-3:2026 is essential for professionals seeking to ensure the compatibility, quality, and safety of small built-in electric motors according to international benchmarks. Its guidance enhances lifecycle management from design and manufacturing through to maintenance and global sourcing.
