Overview
IEC 60794-1-131:2026 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies mechanical test methods for optical fibre cable microducts. Specifically, it defines the microduct inner clearance test, Method E31, which establishes uniform test procedures to assess the mechanical property of the microduct's inner bore clearance. This test is crucial for ensuring optical fibre cables can be efficiently installed by blowing techniques within microducts without obstruction or damage.
This 2026 edition represents a significant technical revision and replaces previous versions found in IEC 60794-1-21:2015 and its 2020 amendment. It focuses exclusively on specifying and detailing Method E31 to ensure testing is standardized globally for microducts aimed at optical fibre cable installations.
Key Topics
- Microduct Inner Clearance Test: Evaluates the ability of the microduct to allow passage of a test object, such as a sphere or cable segment, representing the optical fibre cable, ensuring the inner bore has not been compromised by manufacture or mechanical/environmental stresses.
- Mechanical Test Procedures: The document provides a methodical approach for testing mechanical integrity of microducts post-manufacture or after exposures to mechanical or environmental conditions.
- Test Sample Requirements: Specifies that the test microduct sample length be typically 2 meters (minimum 1 meter) for consistent testing.
- Test Apparatus: Involves a test object sized at no less than 85% of the nominal microduct bore diameter, and a catcher device at the far end to safely capture the test object.
- Testing Methodology: The test object passes through the microduct by gravity or controlled tilt, simulating the clearance conditions without additional forces such as air blowing or pushing.
- Test Reporting: Requires detailed records of the test object, microduct dimensions, sample length, results, and any deviations from prescribed procedures.
Applications
- Optical Fibre Cable Installation: This standard directly supports quality control in the production and testing of microducts used to house optical fibre cables installed via blowing techniques.
- Telecommunications Infrastructure: Ensures that microducts used in network infrastructure maintain sufficient internal clearance to facilitate smooth cable deployment without damage or installation failures.
- Manufacturing Quality Assurance: Provides manufacturers and suppliers with a uniform test method to validate the mechanical integrity of microducts before shipment.
- Environmental and Mechanical Stress Validation: Useful for verifying microduct integrity after exposure to crush tests or environmental conditions, ensuring compliance with installation requirements.
- Design Specification Alignment: Assists designers and engineers in defining microduct dimensions and tolerances that guarantee installation success.
Related Standards
- IEC 60794-1-2: Provides general guidance on basic optical cable test procedures and serves as a reference framework for this standard.
- IEC 60794 Series: The broader series covering generic and detailed specifications for optical fibre cables, encompassing a wide range of tests and requirements.
- ISO/IEC Directives: Frameworks governing the development and structure of IEC standards, ensuring consistency and international acceptance.
- Industry Installation Guidelines: Complementary documents providing practical procedures on optical fibre cable blowing and installation methodologies that rely on microduct specifications validated by this test.
IEC 60794-1-131:2026 is essential for professionals involved in the design, manufacture, testing, and installation of optical fibre cable microducts. By standardizing the microduct inner clearance test method, it contributes to the reliability and efficiency of fibre optic infrastructure deployment crucial for modern telecommunications networks.

methods have been restructured and renumbered. The optical cable element test methods
contained in IEC 60794-1-21:2015 and IEC 60794-1-21:2020/AMD1:2020 will now be
individually numbered in the IEC 60794-1-1xx series. Each test method is now considered to
be an individual document rather than part of a multi-test method compendium. Full cross-
reference details are given in IEC 60794-1-2.
1 Scope
This part of IEC 60794 describes the test procedures used to establish uniform requirements
for microduct used to install optical fibre cables by blowing technique for the mechanical
property - microduct inner clearance test.
This document applies to microduct for use in optical fibre cable installation by blowing.
NOTE Throughout the document, the wording “optical cable” can also include optical fibre units, microduct fibre
units, etc.

For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any
amendments) applies.

4 General requirements
IEC 60794-1-2 is the reference guide to test methods of all types. It shall be considered for
general requirements and definitions.
5 Object
An inner clearance test consists of passing a test object, such as a sphere or a short length
(e.g. 100 mm) of similar sized microduct optical cable, through the section of a microduct or
microduct assembly after manufacture, or that has been subjected to a mechanical or
environmental test (for example, following a crush test).
The purpose of this test is to confirm the maintenance of the inner bore of a short length of
microduct or protected microduct assembly, following the manufacture, or mechanical or
environmental testing. A successful test indicates that the microduct has not been significantly
damaged by the manufacturing process or the test applied. In reality, during installation, the
cable typically experiences both push and blow
