Overview
EN 62885-3:2015 (IEC 62885-3:2014) defines standardised methods for measuring the performance of wet carpet cleaning appliances intended for household use. It specifies the essential performance characteristics of wet extraction carpet cleaners, describes test conditions and measurement procedures, and is intended to be used together with dry vacuum test methods in IEC 60312-1. This part is not applicable to steam cleaning vacuums and focuses on carpet testing under conditions similar to household environments.
Key Topics
The standard covers test methods, test conditions and measurable performance characteristics, including:
- General test conditions
- Atmospheric conditioning, test equipment and materials, voltage/frequency and running-in procedures.
- Conditioning of test samples and use of in‑house reference cleaner systems.
- Wet cleaning performance tests
- Wet cleaning effectiveness on carpets (visual and instrumented assessment).
- Re-soiling resistance after cleaning.
- Drying time of cleaned carpets.
- Maximum usable capacity of dirt recovery receptacles and cleaning liquid tanks.
- Maximum flow rate of cleaning liquid and pick-up rate of soiled liquid.
- Tests for upholstery cleaning and notes on wet hard‑surface cleaning (hard-floor tests are under consideration as a separate standard).
- Miscellaneous performance and usability tests
- Motion resistance, life testing, mass and weight-in-hand, specific cleaning time, dimensions, noise level and energy consumption.
- Test materials and equipment
- Specifications for synthetic soils, carpet types and preparation procedures; informative annexes provide supplier and material information.
Applications
EN 62885-3:2015 is used to produce repeatable, comparable performance data for wet carpet cleaning appliances. Typical applications:
- Product performance verification and R&D for manufacturers of wet carpet cleaners.
- Independent testing laboratories and certification bodies conducting comparative performance tests.

Methods for measuring the performance
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of
patent rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard IEC 62885-3 has been prepared by subcommittee 59F: Surface
cleaning appliances, of IEC technical committee 59: Performance of household and similar
electrical appliances.
This first edition cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 60312-2 published in 2010. This
edition constitutes a technical revision.
This edition includes a complete revision of the wet carpet cleaning test in Clause 5 and
changes related to this test. The International Standard has also been limited to tests on
carpets.

Part 3: Wet carpet cleaning appliances –
Methods for measuring the performance
1 Scope
This part of IEC 62885 is applicable to wet cleaning appliances for household use for carpet
cleaning in or under conditions similar to those in households. This part of IEC 62885 is not
applicable to steam cleaning vacuums.
The purpose of this standard is to:
– specify the essential performance characteristics of wet cleaning appliances being of
interest to users
– describe methods for measuring these characteristics and
– be complementary to the methods for dry vacuum cleaners in IEC 60312-1.
NOTE Due to influence of environmental conditions, variations in time, origin of test materials and proficiency of
the operator, most of the described test methods will give more reliable results when applied for comparative
testing of a number of appliances at the same time, in the same laboratory and by the same operator.
See IEC 60335-1 and IEC 60335-2-2 for safety requirements.
Wet hard floor tests are under consideration and are intended to be published in a separate
standard.

are indispensable for its application. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For
undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any
amendments) applies.
