The standard EN 62841-2-4:2014 provides comprehensive safety guidelines specifically tailored for electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery, with a focused emphasis on hand-held sanders and polishers, excluding the disc type. This standard is particularly relevant as it addresses the safety requirements for various sanding tools, including belt, drum, orbital, reciprocating, and random orbit sanders and polishers. One of the significant strengths of EN 62841-2-4:2014 is its detailed scope, which specifies the limitations of voltage and power input applicable to these tools. The regulation stipulates a maximum rated voltage of 250 V for single-phase tools, and 480 V for three-phase tools, along with a limitation of 3,700 W for rated input. This clarity helps manufacturers ensure that their products meet essential safety benchmarks. Moreover, the standard encompasses hazards associated with the use and misuse of hand-held sanders and polishers, safeguarding both users and bystanders. By including provisions for tools that can be transformed into fixed machines when mounted on supports, the standard recognizes modern usage patterns and promotes safe practices for transportable tools, ensuring that a wide range of equipment is covered under its specifications. The attention drawn to transitional periods for manufacturers and testing organizations following the publication of new standards emphasizes the practical implications of the document, underlining the committee's understanding that industry needs time to align with updated requirements. This transitional consideration serves as a practical framework, helping to facilitate compliance while maintaining safety. The inclusion of Annex K, which addresses the applicability of the standard for battery-operated tools, further enhances relevance in today’s market where battery-powered options are increasingly prevalent. This forward-thinking aspect ensures that the standard remains applicable across a variety of technologies. Overall, EN 62841-2-4:2014 stands out for its thoroughness, addressing various aspects of safety for hand-held sanders and polishers. Its structured approach, combined with clear specifications and relevant considerations for manufacturers and testing organizations, establishes it as an essential standard for ensuring safe operations and compliance in the industry.
