Overview

EN IEC/IEEE 60076-57-1202:2025/A11:2025 specifies the requirements for liquid immersed phase-shifting transformers. Issued by the CLC and developed with input from international and European technical committees, this standard applies to all types of phase-shifting transformers except those with unregulated phase shifts. It addresses aspects unique to phase-shifting transformer (PST) design, construction, testing, and performance, while referencing established standards for general transformer requirements, such as those in the EN 60076 series.

Phase-shifting transformers are critical components in electrical power systems for controlling power flow and improving grid stability. This standard is designed to ensure harmonized quality, safety, energy performance, and interoperability across Europe and globally.

Key Topics

EN IEC/IEEE 60076-57-1202:2025/A11:2025 covers several essential topics specific to liquid immersed phase-shifting transformers:

  • Normative References: Clarifies applicable European (EN) and IEC standards, including parts of EN 50708 and IEC 60076.
  • Scope of Application: Exclusively addresses requirements for phase-shifting transformers, with additional European requirements not covered in base power transformer standards.
  • Energy Performance: Introduces mandatory compliance with energy efficiency performance as defined in related EN 50708 documents.
  • Transport Guidance: Notes the importance of safe handling during transit, referencing CIGRE guidance for best practices.
  • Liquid Insulation & Preservation: Specifies requirements for insulation, preservation systems, and the terminology for protection devices per EN IEC 60076-22-1.
  • Testing and Classification: Clarifies conditions for lightning impulse testing and the precedence of specific test requirements over general standards.
  • Documented Information Requirements: Details the essential standards and technical particulars that must be supplied for compliance.

Applications

Liquid immersed phase-shifting transformers governed by this standard are widely used in:

  • Transmission Grid Management: Optimizing power flow, voltage regulation, and load balancing on transmission networks.
  • Interconnection Points: Managing unforeseen power swings between asynchronous or weakly interconnected power systems.
  • Enhanced Grid Stability: Supporting grid code compliance and congestion management, crucial in regions with high renewable energy penetration.
  • Industrial and Utility Installations: Implementing sophisticated power management strategies in large industrial complexes or regional utility networks.

By setting harmonized requirements for construction, performance, and testing, this standard enables manufacturers, utilities, and system operators to achieve high reliability, operational efficiency, and compliance with European and international requirements.

Related Standards

Several related standards provide foundational requirements or are referenced for specific technical aspects in EN IEC/IEEE 60076-57-1202:2025/A11:2025:

  • EN 60076-1, -2, -3, -5, -10, -18: General, temperature rise, insulation, short circuit, sound level, and frequency response for power transformers.
  • EN 50708-1-1, -2-1, -3-1: Additional European requirements for medium or large power transformers.
  • EN IEC 60076-22 series: Fittings for power transformers, including protective devices, cooling equipment, and communication-ready devices.
  • IEC 60214-1: Performance and test methods for tap-changers.
  • CIGRE Brochure 673: Practical guidance on transformer transportation.
  • ISO 2178, ISO 2409: Coating and paint testing referenced for transformer finishes.

By aligning with these documents, stakeholders enhance interoperability, streamline procurement, and facilitate regulatory compliance throughout the transformer lifecycle.
