Overview

The prEN IEC 61753-042-02:2025 is an international performance standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the CLC. This standard specifies minimum initial performance, test methods, measurement requirements, and severity levels for plug-pigtail-style and plug-receptacle-style OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) reflecting devices used in category C controlled environments.

These OTDR reflecting devices are crucial for out-of-band OTDR testing in optical fibre systems, ensuring accurate diagnostics and maintenance capabilities in environments with controlled conditions. This standard replaces the previous edition from 2014 and aligns testing procedures with IEC 61753-1:2018 requirements, promoting global harmonization.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application: Defines performance criteria for OTDR reflecting devices utilized in controlled environments (category C), important for maintaining optical fibre system integrity.
  • Terms and Definitions: Includes essential terminology such as OTDR reflecting devices, passband wavelength ranges (1260–1360 nm, 1480–1500 nm, 1550–1560 nm), and reflection-band wavelength ranges (1620–1630 nm or 1645–1655 nm).
  • Test Methods: Outlines comprehensive test procedures based on IEC 61300 series standards, covering vibration, mating durability, fiber retention, torsion, tensile strength, shock, thermal conditions, and optical power handling.
  • Performance Requirements: Specifies compliance criteria without mandating reference components, emphasizing dimensional conformity to IEC 61754 series or equivalent IEC interface standards.
  • Sample Size and Reporting: Describes the required number of samples for different tests, focusing on single-mode fibers according to IEC 60793-2-50 categories B-652.B, B-652.D, or B-657. Comprehensive test reports are mandatory as evidence of compliance.
  • Wavelength Specifications: Tests involve standard signal wavelengths from 1260 nm to 1360 nm, 1480 nm to 1500 nm, 1550 nm to 1560 nm, and OTDR wavelengths between 1620–1630 nm or 1645–1655 nm.
  • Controlled Environment Focus: Enhances equipment reliability in environments where factors such as temperature, humidity, and contamination are tightly regulated.

Applications

prEN IEC 61753-042-02:2025 applies primarily to manufacturers, testers, and quality assurance teams involved in the design, production, and validation of fibre optic interconnecting devices, specifically OTDR reflecting devices. Applications include:

  • Telecommunications Networks: Ensuring OTDR devices used for fiber network diagnostics perform reliably in controlled environments to detect faults and maintain network health.
  • Data Centers: Supporting high-precision fibre optic connections where controlled environments are standard for stable and high-performance data transmission.
  • Optical Network Testing: Facilitating robust out-of-band testing capabilities to monitor fiber integrity without interfering with operational signals.
  • Quality Control: Guiding manufacturers in conformance testing to meet international standards enhancing product interoperability and durability.
  • Research and Development: Providing standardized testing frameworks for innovating and improving fibre optic components resilience under controlled conditions.

Related Standards

This performance standard is part of the IEC 61753 series on fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. Relevant related standards include:

39 FOREWORD
40 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
41 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
42 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
43 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
44 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
45 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
46 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
47 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
48 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
49 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
50 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
51 interested IEC National Committees.
52 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
53 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
54 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
55 misinterpretation by any end user.
56 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
57 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
58 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
59 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
60 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
61 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
62 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
63 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
64 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
65 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
66 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
67 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
68 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
69 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
70 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
