Dynamic modules - Part 2-1: Reliability qualification - Test template

IEC 62343-2-1:2019 provides a reliability qualification test template for dynamic modules (DMs). The template describes the reliability qualification test items and provides information on requirements or options. Example test conditions are given for information purposes in Annex A. For reliability qualification purposes, some information about the internal components, parts and interconnections is needed. These internal parts are treated as black boxes. This document gives requirements for the evaluation of DM reliability by combining the reliability of such internal black boxes. The object of this reliability qualification test template is to provide a framework for the reliability qualification tests for DMs. Developers of reliability qualification tests for DMs determine the test conditions for each test item by referring to the examples in Annex A. Keywords: dynamic modules (DMs), test requirements for DMs

Dinamični moduli - 2-1. del: Kvalifikacije zanesljivosti - Predloga za preverjanje (IEC 62343-2-1:2019)

Ta standard ponuja predlogo za preverjanje kvalifikacije zanesljivosti dinamičnih modulov (DM). Predloga opisuje preskusne postavke kvalifikacije zanesljivosti in vsebuje informacije o zahtevah ali možnostih. Primeri preskusnih pogojev so v informativne namene navedeni v dodatku A. Za potrebe kvalifikacije zanesljivosti so potrebne nekatere informacije o notranjih komponentah, delih in medsebojnih povezavah.

Overview

EN IEC 62343-2-1:2019 (IEC 62343-2-1:2019) is a reliability qualification test template for dynamic modules (DMs) used in fibre‑optic systems. Rather than prescribing single, uniform test conditions, this standard provides a structured framework describing reliability qualification test items, options and requirements. Example test conditions are given in Annex A for guidance; Annex B supplies recommendations including pass/fail criteria and FMEA guidance. Internal components are treated as black boxes, and the document defines how to evaluate DM reliability by combining the reliability of those internal subsystems.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and approach: A template-based approach recognizing the functional diversity of DMs (e.g., optical switching, wavelength and power management, monitoring).
  • Test items: A defined set of reliability qualification test items (see Table 1 in the standard) that developers should consider when planning qualification.
  • Black‑box evaluation: Requirements for assessing DM reliability by aggregating the reliability of internal components/parts and interconnections treated as black boxes.
  • Example test conditions: Informative examples in Annex A to help determine test parameters (temperature, cycling, mechanical stress, etc.) tailored to each DM type.
  • Recommendations and pass/fail: Informative guidance in Annex B covering pass/fail criteria and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) to support test design and similarity qualification.
  • Normative linkage: References to IEC 62343 (general guidance) and other IEC publications where applicable.

Practical applications and users

This standard is practical for organizations and professionals involved in the design, production and qualification of optical dynamic modules:

  • Module designers and R&D teams - to build reliability test plans matching module functionality.
  • Test engineers and reliability labs - to create qualification protocols using the template and Annex A examples.
  • Quality assurance and product managers - to define acceptance criteria and evidence for product launches.
  • Manufacturers and suppliers - to demonstrate reliability claims and harmonize testing across markets.
  • Certification bodies and purchasers - to evaluate supplier test reports against a recognized framework.

EN IEC 62343-2-1 is especially useful where DM functionality varies widely and a one‑size‑fits‑all test regime is impractical - it enables tailored, consistent reliability qualification while improving comparability of results.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC
Publication(s)"). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.

INTRODUCTION
Dynamic modules (DMs) are relatively new fibre optic devices. In the industry, there is no de-
facto standard of reliability qualification test requirements for DMs. Also, there are many types
and functions of DMs, such as optical path switching, wavelength management, chromatic
dispersion management, optical channel power management, and optical channel powers and
wavelength monitoring. Therefore, it is difficult to standardize the reliability qualif
