EN 62230:2007/A1:2014
(Amendment)Electric cables - Spark-test method
Electric cables - Spark-test method
The spark-test method specified in this standard is intended for the detection of defects in the insulation or sheathing layers of electric cables. For single core cables with no outer metallic layer, the general process is accepted as being equivalent to subjecting samples of those cables to a voltage test in water. This standard specifies the operational requirements for the spark-test equipment, as well as the principal characteristics, functional parameters and calibration procedures for each type of test equipment.

Overview
EN 62230:2007/A1:2014 (IEC 62230:2006/A1:2013) specifies the spark-test method for locating defects in the insulation layers of electric cables. This CENELEC amendment updates test voltages, electrode-use rules and verification requirements for spark (sparker) testing used as an alternative or complement to other high-voltage insulation tests.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Method for locating insulation defects in cable layers using contact or non‑contact spark electrodes; applies primarily to cables with rated voltage U0 between 300 V and 3 000 V (see Annex A).
- Minimum test voltages: Annex A (normative) defines minimum spark-test voltages by radial layer thickness and waveform (a.c., d.c., h.f., pulse). Example: for a layer thickness 0–0.25 mm the table lists approx. a.c. 3 kV, d.c. 5 kV, h.f. 4 kV, pulse 5 kV (refer to the standard for the full table).
- Waveform rules:
- AC and HF voltages are expressed as r.m.s. values; pulse voltages are peak values.
- Pulsed testing is not permitted for layer thicknesses greater than 2.0 mm.
- HF testing for layers >1.0 mm is limited to 500 Hz–4 kHz.
- Alternative to water voltage test: When replacing the traditional voltage test in water for single‑core cables without metallic outer layers, the spark test is limited to layer thicknesses ≤ 2.0 mm and only a.c. or d.c. waveforms may be used.
- Non‑contact electrodes: High‑voltage supply must be d.c. only; the cable conductor or metallic layer must be continuously earthed and the electrode-to-conductor potential difference set to 18 kV (where applicable).
- Equipment sensitivity and verification: Test equipment must detect the faults described in clauses 6.1.1/6.1.2 and be verified per clause 6.3 of the standard.
Applications and users
- Quality control in cable manufacturing for locating insulation defects during production and final inspection.
- Test laboratories and third‑party inspectors carrying out routine acceptance testing.
- Specifiers, OEMs and utilities creating procurement and maintenance procedures that reference spark-test requirements.
- Useful where water‑immersion voltage tests are impractical or for on‑line layer inspections.
Related standards
- EN 62230 is an amendment to EN 62230:2007 (IEC 62230).
- Cable-specific standards may define different test voltages; national standards sometimes specify higher levels. Always consult the relevant cable standard and national regulations when applying EN 62230:2007/A1:2014.
