Overview
EN 27574-3:1988 is a European standard developed by CEN that addresses acoustics in machinery and equipment by providing statistical methods to determine and verify stated noise emission values. This third part of the standard series introduces a simple (transition) method for verifying noise emission values for batches of machines. It is harmonized with the international standard ISO 7574-3:1985 and serves as a practical guideline when a specific noise labelling code for a family of machines is not yet established.
This standard is fundamental for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies aiming to control and assess the noise emissions of machinery batches to ensure compliance with environmental and safety legislation.
Key Topics
Labelled Noise Value Determination
The standard guides labellers in establishing the noise emission values (labelled values, Lₐ) for batches of machines. It emphasizes the importance of statistically deriving these values from measured sound emissions under defined test conditions.Verification Procedure for Batches
A simple statistical method is outlined for verifying that a batch of machines complies with its labelled noise emission value. This involves sampling a small subset (typically n=3) from the batch and calculating mean noise levels to confirm or challenge the stated values.Statistical Principles
The method uses concepts such as sampling, mean values, standard deviation, and decision thresholds to account for variability between individual machines and measurement uncertainties.Use of Existing Acoustics Measurement Standards
When no specific measurement test code exists for a machine family, the standard refers to ISO 3741, ISO 3742, ISO 3743, ISO 3744, and ISO 3745 as sources of established precision or engineering sound power level measurement methodologies.Guidance on Sampling and Measurement Conditions
Test conditions, such as installation and operation modes, must be clearly stated or agreed upon to ensure repeatability and representativeness of noise measurements.
Applications
Machinery Noise Compliance Verification
Useful for manufacturers needing to verify noise emission claims on machinery batches before market release or during routine quality checks.Regulatory Noise Labelling Compliance
Helps regulatory authorities evaluate machine noise emissions where standardized labelling codes are pending, providing a transitional verification tool.Quality Control in Production
Enables production quality control teams to statistically monitor noise emission consistency across batches, identifying deviations early.Contractual and Industry Agreements
Supports contractual agreements or industry standards by providing an agreed method to statistically verify noise emission values.Environmental Noise Management
Assists organizations in maintaining compliance with workplace and environmental noise exposure limits by controlling equipment noise emissions.
Related Standards
ISO 7574 Series
The EN 27574-3:1988 corresponds with part 3 of the ISO 7574 series on statistical methods for noise emission determination and verification. Parts 1, 4, and 7 provide definitions, more detailed methods, and general considerations.ISO 3741 to ISO 3746 Standards
Referenced for sound power level measurement techniques under various test conditions, essential for accurate noise emission data acquisition.ISO 7574-4: Methods for Stated Values for Batches of Machines
Provides more comprehensive methods applicable once specific noise labelling codes are available.
Summary
EN 27574-3:1988 is a critical transitional European standard offering a practical and straightforward statistical method for determining and verifying noise emission values of machinery batches. It balances simplicity and statistical rigor for situations lacking specific labelling codes, ensuring validated noise data for compliance and quality control. By referencing established measurement standards and emphasizing clear sampling and testing processes, it facilitates consistent and reliable noise emission assessments to support manufacturers, regulators, and industry stakeholders in effective noise management.

Foreword ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern- mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take patt in the work. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by the ISO Council. They are approved in accordance with ISO procedures requiring at least 75 % approval by the member bodies voting. International Standard ISO 7574/3 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 43, A cous tics. Users should note that all International Standards undergo revision from time to time and that any reference made herein to any other International Standard implies its latest edition, unless otherwise stated. 0 International Organkation for Standardkation, 1985 l Printed in Switzerland SIST EN 27574-3:1997
INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ISO 7574/3-1985 (EI Acoustics - Statistical methods for determining and verifying stated noise emission values of machinery and equipment - Part 3 : Simple (transition) method for stated values for batches of machines 0 Introduction A general introduction to the four-part series of ISO 7574 is given in ISO 7574/1. For the purposes of this part of ISO 7574, the term “labelled value” Stands for all kinds of stated values (e.g. information on a label, the upper noise limit set by an authority, the agreed contract value) for which the methods may be applied. 1 Scope and field of application This part of ISO 7574 is derived from ISO 7574/4. lt provides guidelines for determining the labelled value, L,, by the labeller and specifies a simple method for verifying compliance of the noise emissions of a batch (lot) of machinery or equipment with its labelled value, L,. This method may be used when a specific noise labelling code (in accordance with clause 6 of ISO 7574/4) specifying the reference Standard deviation, Sample size and sampling procedure for the family of machines does not yet exist. If a specific noise labelling code exists, it shall be used, in which case reference to this part of ISO 7574 shall not be made. This part of ISO 7574 should preferably be used only by agree- ment, e.g. as reached in the Standards relating to the relevant machinery industry or in a contract. This part of ISO 7574 does not deal with the consequences that ensue if the stated value is not confirmed as verified for a batch of machines. 2 References ISO 3741, Acoustics - Determination of Sound power levels of noise sources - Precision methods for broad-band sources in reverbera tion rooms.
