Overview
EN 1519-1:2019 is the CEN (European) standard specifying requirements for solid‑wall polyethylene (PE) pipes, fittings and systems used for soil and waste discharge (low and high temperature) within the building structure. It covers components intended for internal building drainage (application code B) and for combined internal and buried‑within‑building‑structure use (code BD). The standard also addresses ventilating parts of the pipework and rainwater pipework within buildings and defines test parameters for referenced methods.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material and construction: Solid‑wall PE pipes extruded from the same compound throughout the wall with smooth internal and external surfaces. Provisions for use of non‑virgin PE materials are given (Annex A).
- Application marking: Products must be marked “B” or “BD” to indicate intended use. Components marked BD intended for burial require a nominal ring stiffness of at least SN4 for dimensions ≥ 75 mm.
- Jointing types: Standard applies to plain‑ended pipes, sockets with integral elastomeric ring seals, and components for butt fusion, electrofusion, and mechanical joints. Fittings may be injection‑moulded or fabricated from pipes/mouldings.
- Performance & testing: Specifies mechanical, physical and performance characteristics and the test parameters for referenced methods (e.g., MFR, OIT/thermal stability, ring stiffness, watertightness). Thermal stability (OIT) requirement is included.
- Geometrical and marking requirements: Dimensions, wall thickness, socket/spigot geometry, effective lengths, chamfering, colour recommendations and mandatory marking (pipe/fitting identification) are defined.
- Compatibility: Pipes and fittings conforming to plastics product standards listed in Annex B can be used with EN 1519‑1 components where applicable.
