Overview

EN 1888-1:2018/FprA1 is a European Standard developed by the CEN Technical Committee CEN/TC 252, focusing on the safety requirements and test methods for wheeled child conveyances, specifically pushchairs and prams. This standard applies to products designed for transporting one or more children, each up to 15 kg, and includes provisions for integrated platforms supporting children up to 20 kg.

This standard excludes toys, baby carriers with wheels, motor-propelled pushchairs and prams, and those designed for children with special needs. Products with multifunctional designs or convertible features must comply with the relevant standards for each function.

Key Topics

  • Safety Requirements: Covers mechanical and chemical safety hazards, ensuring pushchairs and prams minimize risks such as strangulation, falling, or exposure to harmful substances.
  • Test Methods: Detailed procedures for evaluating product durability, restraint systems, locking mechanisms, and material safety to guarantee reliable performance under typical use conditions.
  • Child Occupant Space: Defines safe dimensions for the seating and standing areas where the child is supported, addressing ergonomics and protection.
  • Chemical Hazards: Limits migration of harmful elements from materials in contact or accessible to children, compliant with EN 71-3.
  • Mechanical Hazards: Includes requirements for adjustable parts, locking devices, free lengths of cords, and resistance to mechanical wear and tear.
  • Product Information: Specifies the pictograms and labeling for maximum child weight and safe use instructions, enhancing consumer awareness and product traceability.
  • Testing Equipment: Defines specialized tools like the small head probe for loop hazard assessment and bite tester for padding resistance evaluation.

Applications

  • Manufacturers: Ensures compliance with rigorous safety standards for designing, producing, and labeling pushchairs and prams to market products in Europe.
  • Safety Test Laboratories: Provides test methods and criteria to verify product safety before certification and sale.
  • Retailers and Consumers: Offers reliable product information, helping caregivers select appropriate and safe wheeled child conveyances with clear weight limits and safety instructions.
  • Regulatory Bodies: Supports enforcement of child safety laws and standards across the European Economic Area.

Related Standards

  • EN 71-3: Safety of toys - Migration of certain elements; applicable to material safety for child-contact surfaces.
  • Other Parts of EN 1888 Series: Standards covering additional child conveyance types or specific product categories beyond pushchairs and prams.
  • Child Safety Restraint Standards: Complementary regulations governing harnesses and restraints integrated into wheeled conveyances.
  • ISO Standards on Child Safety: International norms on child safety articles that align or extend EN 1888-1 requirements.
