Overview

EN 749:2004 (CEN) - "Playing field equipment - Handball goals - Functional and safety requirements, test methods" - sets the European requirements for handball and indoor hockey goals used for training and competition. Approved by CEN in 2004, the standard defines two goal types (ground-socket and freestanding), materials, safety design, testing procedures and required documentation (assembly, maintenance, marking and warning labels). Goals built to EN 749 can also be used for indoor football.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Classification: Two types - Type 1 (with ground sockets) and Type 2 (freestanding with net supports, anti‑tilt devices and bottom bars).
  • Materials & construction: Goal frames may be timber, steel, light metal or plastics; net supports and bars must be corrosion‑protected metal; net fixings non‑corrosive; net yarns synthetic or natural.
  • Dimensions & nets: Net construction and dimensions are specified; net headline (rope) minimum breaking force: 7 000 N (classes in the standard include a 3 000 N option for some uses). Mesh and yarn strength classes are defined (mesh breaking strength table in the standard).
  • Safety features:
    • Edges/corners: rounded - general corners ≥ 3 mm radius; frame edges (4 ± 1) mm.
    • Net fixings must not injure players (openings ≤ 8 mm or ≥ 25 mm; no metal cup hooks; spring hooks must have screw caps).
    • Ground sockets used outdoors must include drainage.
  • Strength & stability tests:
    • Strength test: vertical load 1 800 N applied at centre of crossbar for 1 min; crossbar must not fracture, collapse or show permanent deformation > 10 mm.
    • Stability test: horizontal load 1 100 N applied at crossbar top for 1 min via 3 000 mm rope; goal must not fall or slide.
  • Information & marking: Manufacturer must supply assembly/maintenance instructions and permanent warning label (use, securing against tilting, do not climb). Marking must reference EN 749 and manufacturer details.

Applications

  • Use for handball training and competition, indoor hockey and compatible indoor football contexts.
  • Applies to design, manufacture, testing, installation and procurement of handball goals in sports halls, schools, clubs and competition venues.

Who should use this standard

  • Goal manufacturers and designers
  • Sports facility managers and installers
