Overview
EN 16668:2016/FprA1 is a European standard developed by CEN that defines the requirements and testing methods for metallic industrial valves used as pressure accessories. It applies to metallic valves with a maximum allowable pressure (PS) exceeding 0.5 bar, in line with the European legislation for pressure equipment, including the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 97/23/EC and its successors. This standard establishes minimum criteria for design, manufacturing, testing, material selection, and documentation to ensure the safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance of metallic industrial valves employed in pressure systems.
Notably, EN 16668 excludes safety valves, bursting discs, sight glasses, and measurement chambers, which have separate standards or regulatory guidelines. The standard supports manufacturers and regulatory bodies in achieving conformity with essential safety requirements for pressure equipment in industrial applications.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
EN 16668 covers metallic valves classified as pressure accessories where the maximum allowable pressure is greater than 0.5 bar. Valves under Article 4(3) of the European legislation for pressure equipment are exempt but must adhere to sound engineering practice.Design Requirements
Mandates design for adequate strength based on validated calculation methods or experimental validation where necessary. The standard enforces design loadings and stresses in line with European regulatory requirements.Material Selection and Quality Assurance
Specifies materials must meet appropriate mechanical and corrosion resistance properties, be free from aging effects, and be suitable for required processing procedures. Traceability and conformity with material specifications are essential.Manufacturing and Testing Procedures
Includes non-destructive testing, hydrostatic testing, heat treatment, and final inspection requirements. Specific assessments by notified bodies are mandated for valves in higher pressure categories (III or IV).Documentation and Traceability
Requires comprehensive documentation including inspection certificates, material certifications in line with EN 764-5, and clear operating instructions labeling.Conformity Assessment
Addresses the conformity procedures under the European legislation for pressure equipment, including categorization using DN (nominal diameter), PS (pressure), and fluid groups, with detailed guidance on pressure accessory classification.
Applications
EN 16668 is essential for industries that utilize metallic valves as part of pressure systems where safety and regulatory compliance are critical. Common practical applications include:
Oil and Gas Industry
Valves in pipelines and processing plants managing high-pressure fluids.Chemical and Petrochemical Plants
Controlling flow in systems subject to stringent safety and corrosion resistance requirements.Power Generation
Valves in steam, water, and gas systems requiring robust testing and certification.Manufacturing and Process Industries
Industrial valve design and testing for various machinery and production lines involving pressure systems.
Implementing EN 16668 ensures valves meet stringent safety and reliability metrics, crucial for preventing leaks, equipment failure, and ensuring operational integrity under pressurized conditions.
