Overview
EN ISO 23145-1:2016 (ISO 23145-1:2007) defines a standardized method to determine the tap density of granulated or ungranulated ceramic powders. Commonly used in fine ceramics and advanced technical ceramics industries, the standard uses a constant-volume measuring method: a known-volume container is filled, tapped under controlled conditions until packing saturation, and the mass per unit volume (tap density) is calculated. Keywords: tap density, bulk density, ceramic powders, ISO 23145-1, EN ISO 23145-1:2016.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & principle: Tap density is measured by allowing powder to fall freely into a fixed-volume cylinder, tapping to achieve saturated packing, and calculating mass/volume.
- Apparatus:
- Cylindrical stainless-steel container, volume 100 cm3 (diameter-to-height ratio ≈ 1). Example dimensions: 50 mm diameter × 51 mm height and a 50 mm ring.
- Sieve per ISO 565 (aperture 0.71 mm) for sample preparation.
- Balance with precision 0.1 g (0.01 g recommended for very fluffy powders).
- Tapping apparatus with stroke (10 ± 1) mm and tapping frequency < 180 taps/min; container must remain vertical during tapping.
- Sampling & pretreatment:
- Test powders “as received” unless drying is required. If dried, typical condition: (110 ± 10) °C for at least 1 h and cooled in a desiccator (do not dry if volatile components present).
- Test in triplicate (three test portions).
- Procedure highlights:
- Weigh empty container, fill (powder passed through sieve) with ring in place.
- Initial tapping: 1 000 taps while maintaining a powder surplus cone (20–30 mm above rim).
- Subsequent tapping cycles of 100 taps; repeat until mass change between cycles ≤ 0.3%.
- Remove surplus with straight-edge, weigh, and compute density.
- Calculation & reporting:
- Tap density = mass of powder after final tapping ÷ 100 cm3.
- Test report must list test conditions, powder description, pretreatment, results (g/cm3 or kg/m3), and any anomalies.
Applications - who uses it
- Quality control laboratories in advanced ceramics manufacturing
- Materials scientists and powder technologists assessing packing and flow behavior
- R&D teams optimizing powder processing, compaction and sintering behavior
- Suppliers and buyers specifying powder properties for ceramic components, electronic ceramics, and technical ceramics
Related standards
- ISO 23145-2 (untapped density)
- ISO 565 (test sieves)
- ISO 3953 and EN 725-8 (related tapped density methods)
- ASTM standards for tap density of metallic and other powders
EN ISO 23145-1:2016 is essential when consistent, reproducible tap density data are required for specification, process control, or comparative testing of fine ceramic powders.
