Overview
EN 15004-10:2017 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies requirements for fixed firefighting systems using the gas extinguishing agent IG-541. This standard focuses on the physical properties, system design, usage, and safety aspects of gas extinguishing systems employing IG-541, an inert gas mixture composed of nitrogen, argon, and carbon dioxide. Applicable to systems operating at nominal pressures of 150 bar, 200 bar, and 300 bar, EN 15004-10:2017 plays a critical role in ensuring effective fire suppression while maintaining personnel safety and environmental sustainability.
Key Topics
IG-541 Composition and Properties
IG-541 consists of approximately 52% nitrogen, 40% argon, and 8% carbon dioxide by volume. It is a colourless, odourless, electrically non-conductive gas with physical properties closely matching air density. This inert gas mixture suppresses fire primarily by reducing oxygen concentration in the hazard enclosure atmosphere.System Design and Pressure Ratings
The standard provides detailed data on fill pressures for storage containers at 150, 200, and 300 bar nominal pressures, including maximum working pressures at elevated temperatures. Notably, IG-541 containers are not superpressurized, which influences storage and handling practices.Extinguishant Quantities and Concentrations
EN 15004-10:2017 outlines the extinguishing and design concentrations required to achieve effective fire suppression for various fuel types and hazard classifications. Design concentrations incorporate a safety factor of 1.3 above extinguishing concentrations determined through testing in accordance with EN 15004-1:2017.Safety Considerations for Personnel
The standard emphasizes risks associated with oxygen depletion during discharge of IG-541 and exposure to combustion products. It provides guidance on safe exposure limits such as the No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) of approximately 43% IG-541 by volume and the Lowest Observed Adverse Effect Level (LOAEL) of 52%, ensuring that system designs account for human safety.Environmental Impact
IG-541 is environmentally benign with zero Global Warming Potential (GWP) and zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), aligning with sustainable safety practices in fire protection engineering.
Applications
EN 15004-10:2017 is widely used across industries and critical infrastructure sectors requiring fixed gaseous fire suppression systems, especially:
- Data Centers and Server Rooms: Protect sensitive electronics without damaging equipment with electrically non-conductive IG-541 systems.
- Telecommunications Facilities: Maintain uptime by preventing fire damage using safe, inert gas extinguishing.
- Museums and Archives: Suppress fires effectively while preserving valuable artifacts, reducing oxygen concentration without residue.
- Industrial Machinery Spaces: Apply IG-541 for rapid, total flooding fire suppression in areas with high-value equipment sensitive to water or foam.
- Marine and Offshore Installations: Use IG-541 systems compliant with EN 15004-10 to meet fire suppression safety requirements in confined spaces.

Summary
EN 15004-10:2017 establishes essential technical requirements for IG-541 gas extinguishing systems used in fixed firefighting applications. With detailed focus on physical properties, system pressures, extinguishing concentrations, personnel safety, and environmental impact, this standard ensures reliable fire protection tailored to critical assets. Compliance with EN 15004-10:2017 supports the design of efficient, safe, and ecologically responsible gas extinguishing solutions suitable for a wide range of modern industrial and commercial fire suppression needs.
