Overview
The EN ISO 11930:2019/A1:2022 standard, titled Cosmetics - Microbiology - Evaluation of the antimicrobial protection of a cosmetic product - Amendment 1, is a crucial update to the original ISO 11930:2019. Prepared by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 217 and CEN/TC 392, this amendment refines the methodology used to evaluate the antimicrobial protection efficacy of cosmetic products, ensuring microbial safety and product integrity throughout shelf life. It introduces important updates such as the inclusion of Modified Eugon LT broth as an alternative culture medium in antimicrobial testing protocols.
This European Standard facilitates harmonization across CEN member countries by specifying microbiological testing procedures, vital for cosmetics manufacturers, quality control laboratories, and regulatory bodies focusing on product safety and consumer protection.
Key Topics
- Purpose: Establishes an enhanced framework for measuring the antimicrobial effectiveness of preservatives within cosmetic formulations.
- Microbiological Evaluation: Focuses on methods to assess how well a cosmetic product resists microbial contamination during use.
- Modified Eugon LT Broth: Introduces this newly accepted culture medium as an alternative to Eugon LT 100 liquid broth for efficacy testing.
- Composition includes pancreatic digest of casein, papaic digest of soybean meal, sodium chloride, L-cystine, sodium sulphite, glucose, egg lecithin, polysorbate 80, and sodium lauryl ether sulfate.
- Preparation protocols ensure consistent broth quality, sterilization conditions, and pH adjustment (7.0 ± 0.2).
- Standardization and Compliance: Mandates compliance across European nations and supports global conformity aligned with ISO and CEN regulations.
- Scope of Use: Suitable for evaluating all types of cosmetic and toiletry products to verify antimicrobial preservative performance.
Applications
- Product Development: Enables cosmetic manufacturers to test and optimize preservatives that ensure product microbiological safety and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Quality Control: Provides laboratories with validated microbiological methods for routine testing to confirm ongoing product protection against bacteria, yeast, and molds.
- Regulatory Submission: Assists companies in compiling scientifically robust data demonstrating antimicrobial efficacy to meet safety standards enforced within the European Union and other regions adhering to ISO directives.
- Consumer Safety: Improves the confidence of end-users by ensuring that cosmetic products have adequate antimicrobial protection to prevent spoilage and reduce risks of infections.
