Overview
EN 3061:2007 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies requirements for rigid single row ball bearings in corrosion-resisting steel with a flanged alignment housing specifically designed for aerospace and airframe rolling applications. These bearings are engineered to withstand slow rotations and slight oscillations under load, making them suitable for use in torsion lever hubs and separated support systems of aircraft structures.
Key features of the standard include strict definitions on dimensions, loads, tolerances, and materials to ensure optimal performance and reliability in critical aerospace environments. The bearings operate effectively within a temperature range of -54 °C to 150 °C, with lubrication options defined in conjunction with EN 3727 to extend operating conditions.
Key Topics
Bearing Construction
The bearings comprise a rigid, corrosion-resistant single row of balls housed within a solid or lightweight flanged alignment housing. Components include inner and outer rings, balls, shields or seals (options defined by manufacturer), and alignment housing coded as either solid or lightweight.Dimensions and Tolerances
All dimensional specifications, including bore diameters, clearances, runouts, and torques, are rigorously defined with micrometre-level tolerances. Surface roughness and finishing conditions prior to surface treatment (passivation or none) are standardized for optimal assembly and longevity.Load Capacities
The standard provides detailed permissible static axial and radial loads based on housing type-solid (code C) or lightweight (code D). Operators can reference displacement-specific load values for precise sizing and application needs.Materials and Surface Treatments
Materials are selected for aerospace-grade hardness and corrosion resistance: stainless steel grades EN 2030, EN 2226, and EN 2502, among others, with specified hardness levels (e.g., 58 HRC for rings and balls). Surface treatment primarily involves ISO 8075 passivation ensuring protective coatings against corrosion.Lubrication and Temperature Range
Bearings must be lubricated using greases defined in EN 3727: ester type very high pressure grease (code A) and synthetic hydrocarbons grease (code B), with specific operating temperature ranges-up to 121 °C for code A and 177 °C for code B grease.Marking and Designation
Traceability and identification adhere to EN 2424 marking standards, with a clear designation format detailing grease type, diameter code, bearing type, alignment housing, and surface treatment.
Applications
EN 3061:2007 bearings are primarily tailored for aerospace structural components, including:
- Hubs in torsion levers
- Separated support assemblies in airframes
- Components requiring low-speed rotational movement and slight oscillations under load
- Environments demanding corrosion resistance and wide temperature tolerance
These bearings contribute to enhanced reliability and safety in aerospace mechanical design by ensuring predictable performance, longevity, and resistance to harsh operating conditions such as low temperatures and corrosive atmospheres.
