Overview
EN 14972-11:2023 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the fire testing requirements for fixed firefighting water mist systems used in cable tunnels. This standard focuses on deluge water mist systems with open nozzles, which can be activated either through an automatic release mechanism, such as a fire detection system, or manually. The protocol establishes rigorous test methods to ensure the effectiveness and reliability of these water mist systems in protecting cable tunnels against fire hazards.
This standard forms part 11 of the broader EN 14972 series on fixed firefighting water mist systems, guiding manufacturers, installers, and testing laboratories in designing, installing, inspecting, maintaining, and validating water mist fire suppression solutions specifically tailored to cable tunnel environments.
Key Topics
Scope of Application
EN 14972-11 details the test protocols for water mist systems protecting cable tunnels, emphasizing the use of open nozzle deluge systems. The tests ensure that systems reliably control cable tunnel fires when triggered automatically or manually.Test Setup and Fuel Package
The test assembly comprises a realistic cable tunnel enclosure, including non-combustible walls, cable trays of specific dimensions, and a standardized fire load made of different cable types. A propane burner simulates the ignition source, and ventilation is controlled to replicate forced longitudinal airflow of approximately 1 m/s.System Performance Requirements
Fire tests must be conducted under manufacturer-specified conditions including nozzle positioning, water flow, and pressure. The system should maintain water discharge for 15 minutes after activation, effectively suppressing the fire with minimal residual flames and smouldering.Instrumentation and Criteria
Testing involves precise temperature, pressure, and airflow measurements to assess fire suppression performance. Pass/fail criteria emphasize fire control and damage limitation, ensuring only small, localized flamelets remain post-test without smouldering.Documentation and Consistency
A detailed test report documenting all test parameters, results, and adherence to system specifications is required. Component configurations and environmental conditions must remain consistent throughout testing.
Applications
EN 14972-11:2023 is critically relevant for:
- Fire protection of cable tunnels in public infrastructure such as underground transit systems, data centers, power utilities, and communication lines.
- Manufacturers and designers of fixed water mist firefighting systems aiming to certify products according to European standards for cable tunnel safety.
- Testing laboratories performing standardized fire suppression efficacy assessments.
- Building owners and safety engineers assessing or implementing effective fire protection systems to mitigate cable fire risks.
- Enhancing fire safety compliance and ensuring regulatory alignment for installed water mist systems in tunnel environments.
