Overview

EN 1081:2018+A1:2020 is a key European standard developed by CEN focusing on the electrical resistance measurement of resilient, laminate, and modular multilayer floor coverings. It details standardized test methods to accurately determine three critical electrical resistance parameters:

  • Vertical resistance (R1)
  • Resistance to earth (R2)
  • Surface resistance (R3)

These methods apply to floor coverings both in test samples and after installation, providing essential guidelines to ensure safety, performance, and compliance with electrostatic discharge requirements.

Key Topics

1. Scope and Purpose

The standard defines procedures to test electrical characteristics of floor coverings, crucial in environments sensitive to static electricity such as healthcare, electronics manufacturing, and cleanrooms.

2. Test Methods

  • Method A (Vertical Resistance, R1): Measures resistance from a tripod electrode on the surface to an electrode beneath the test piece.
  • Method B (Resistance to Earth, R2): Determines resistance between a loaded tripod electrode placed on the installed flooring and earth, reflecting real-world electrical dissipation performance.
  • Method C (Surface Resistance, R3): Measures resistance between two tripod electrodes positioned 100 mm apart on the installed floor covering surface.

3. Apparatus Requirements

  • Tripod Electrode: Equipped with conductive rubber feet and insulated upper surface for consistent contact. Rubber hardness is regulated (50-70 IRHD) to ensure stable resistance measurements.
  • Load Application: Minimum 300 N force applied to electrodes to simulate realistic contact pressure.
  • Resistance Meter & Power Supply: Instruments conforming to EN 62631-3-1 standard, capable of accurate resistance measurement across a wide range (10 Ω to 10^11 Ω), with adjustable test voltages (10V, 100V, 500V).
  • Environmental Controls: Temperature and humidity are monitored and controlled with precision to (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5)% RH during laboratory testing.

4. Sampling & Conditioning

Samples are taken from representative roll sections or tiles and conditioned before testing to guarantee consistent and repeatable results.

5. Measurement Procedures

Detailed step-by-step instructions ensure reliable measurement, including cleaning protocols, electrode positioning, voltage selection, and repeat readings to capture mean and range of results.

6. Reporting

Test reports document all critical data: floor covering identification, environmental conditions, applied voltages, test method used, individual and average resistance values, installation details, and any deviations from the standard.

Applications

EN 1081:2018+A1:2020 is vital for:

  • Building Industry Professionals: Flooring manufacturers, installers, and quality control labs use the standard to validate electrical safety and performance of floor materials.
  • Static-Sensitive Environments: Hospitals, electronic assembly plants, and cleanroom facilities enforce these tests to minimize static discharge risks that could damage equipment or ignite flammable substances.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Meeting or exceeding EN 1081 helps flooring products comply with local electrical safety regulations and harmonized European norms.
  • Product Development: Facilitates research and development activities by providing standardized metrics for optimizing floor covering electrical properties.

Related Standards

  • EN 62631-3-1: Defines dielectric and resistive property test methods for solid insulating materials and forms the basis for resistance measurement instrumentation used in EN 1081.
  • ISO 48: Outlines hardness testing for rubber, relevant for the tripod electrode’s conductive rubber feet specifications.
  • Other Floor Covering Standards by CEN/TC 134: Includes standards on physical, mechanical, and environmental performance of resilient, textile, and laminate floors complementing electrical resistance testing.

EN 1081:2018+A1:2020 stands as a crucial reference in the standardization of electrical resistance testing for resilient, laminate, and modular multilayer floors, ensuring product safety, performance consistency, and regulatory alignment across Europe and beyond.
