Overview

EN 3280:2011 - Aerospace series - Bearings, airframe rolling, rigid or self-aligning - Technical specification (CEN) defines the required characteristics, inspection and test methods, and qualification and acceptance conditions for rigid and self‑aligning airframe rolling bearings. It is part of the Aerospace series of European standards and supersedes EN 3280:1994. The standard is intended for bearings used in aircraft structures and covers material, dimensional, functional and quality assurance requirements.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and definitions: Terms and definitions for rigid/self‑aligning bearings, seals, shields, running accuracy and internal clearances.
  • Required characteristics: Material, dimensions, masses, marking, surface appearance, hardness, surface roughness and surface treatments must meet product standards or design documentation.
  • Lubrication: Bearings shall be charged with grease to at least 80% of the free internal space; Annex G lists essential lubricant characteristics.
  • Seals and shields: Retention, sealing performance and behaviour at temperature limits are covered (Annexes A, B, C).
  • Running behaviour and starting torque: Verification of running accuracy, running behaviour at ambient and limit temperatures and starting torque tests (Annexes D and C). After temperature tests, mean starting torque shall not exceed 1.5 times the pre‑test mean.
  • Internal clearances and static loads: Verification methods for radial, axial and diagonal clearances (Annex E) and tests for permissible and ultimate static loads (Annex F).
  • Qualification and acceptance: Product qualification follows EN 9133 and EN 9100; first qualification requires nine bearings, subsequent qualifications seven. Manufacturer acceptance tests are listed and a manufacturer’s certificate of conformity is required.
  • Packaging and traceability: Packaging requirements to protect against moisture and contamination, with identification, production and lubrication dates.

Applications and users

EN 3280:2011 is used by:

  • Aircraft component manufacturers and bearing suppliers designing or producing airframe rolling bearings
  • Quality engineers and test laboratories performing acceptance, qualification and periodic inspections
  • Procurement and supply‑chain teams specifying aerospace bearings for OEMs and MRO providers
  • Certification and compliance teams ensuring parts meet aerospace quality and traceability requirements

Practical benefits include consistent product quality, defined test methods for running behaviour and seals, and clear acceptance criteria to reduce in‑service failures.
