Overview
EN 2545-3:1995 (Aerospace series) is a CEN technical specification that defines the particular requirements for pre-production and production castings made from titanium and titanium alloys. It is intended to be used in conjunction with EN 2545-1 (general requirements) and, where remelting stock is involved, with EN 2545-2. Unless otherwise specified by contract, drawing or inspection schedule, castings supplied under EN 2545-3 are to be delivered to quality level 2.
This standard is aimed at ensuring repeatable, auditable practices for the supply and acceptance of titanium castings used in aerospace applications, helping manufacturers and purchasers meet consistent quality and traceability expectations.
Key Topics and Requirements
EN 2545-3 focuses on the particular requirements that apply specifically to pre-production and production castings of titanium alloys. Important areas covered include:
- Scope and applicability for pre-production and production castings in titanium and titanium alloys.
- Integration with EN 2545-1 and EN 2545-2, specifying how parts of the aerospace series work together.
- Quality level designation - default supply quality is quality level 2 unless overridden by contractual documents.
- Inspection and acceptance - requirements tied to order, drawing, and inspection schedules that determine acceptance criteria.
- Traceability and documentation - obligations for record keeping and material identification aligned with aerospace procurement needs.
- Control of production - provisions addressing the transition from pre-production (development) to full production castings.
Note: EN 2545-3 specifies particular requirements but relies on EN 2545-1 for the general technical framework and EN 2545-2 for remelting stock specifications.
Practical Applications
Who uses EN 2545-3 and why:
- Aerospace manufacturers and prime contractors - to specify acceptable casting supply conditions for structural and engine-related titanium parts.
- Foundries and casting suppliers - to ensure supplied castings meet aerospace purchase orders and inspection schedules.
- Quality and procurement engineers - to define acceptance criteria, documentation, and traceability for titanium castings.
- Design and manufacturing engineers - to align casting procurement with production readiness and qualification plans.
Typical uses include specifying requirements for prototype and production runs of titanium components where aerospace-grade quality and consistent supply procedures are essential.
