Fine ceramics (advanced ceramics, advanced technical ceramics) - Mechanical properties of ceramic composites at ambient temperature in air atmospheric pressure - Determination of the resistance to crack propagation by notch sensitivity testing (ISO 18608:2017)
ISO 18608:2017 describes a method for the classification of ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials with respect to their sensitivity to crack propagation using tensile tests on notched specimens with different notch depths. Two classes of ceramic matrix composite materials can be distinguished: materials whose strength is sensitive to the presence of notches and materials whose strength is not affected. For sensitive materials, this document defines a method for determining equivalent fracture toughness.
The parameter, Keq, is defined as the fracture toughness of a homogeneous material which presents the same sensitivity to crack propagation as the ceramic matrix composite material which is being considered. The definition of the Keq parameter offers the possibility to compare ceramic matrix composite materials with other materials with respect to sensitivity to crack propagation.
For notch insensitive materials, the concept of Keq does not apply.
ISO 18608:2017 applies to all ceramic matrix composites with a continuous fibre reinforcement, unidirectional (1 D), bidirectional (2 D), and tridirectional (x D, where 2 < x ≤ 3), loaded along one principal axis of reinforcement.

Fina keramika (sodobna keramika, sodobna tehnična keramika) - Mehanske lastnosti keramičnih kompozitov pri temperaturi okolice in pri zračnem tlaku - Ugotavljanje odpornosti proti širjenju razpoke s preskušanjem občutljivosti zareze (ISO 18608:2017)

Overview - EN ISO 18608:2022 (ISO 18608:2017)
EN ISO 18608:2022 (ISO 18608:2017) is a standardized test method for assessing the resistance to crack propagation of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) at ambient temperature in air (atmospheric pressure). The standard classifies CMC materials by notch sensitivity using tensile tests on notched specimens with varying notch depths. It introduces the parameter Keq - the equivalent fracture toughness of a homogeneous material that shows the same sensitivity to crack propagation as the tested CMC - allowing meaningful comparisons between CMCs and other materials. The standard applies to continuous fibre‑reinforced CMCs (unidirectional 1D, bidirectional 2D, and tridirectional xD where 2 < x ≤ 3) loaded along a principal reinforcement axis.
Key topics and requirements
- Classification of notch behaviour: Distinguishes notch‑sensitive and notch‑insensitive CMCs; Keq is defined only for sensitive materials.
- Test principle: Tensile testing of un‑notched and notched specimens with controlled notch depths to evaluate strength reduction and crack‑propagation sensitivity.
- Specimen types and preparation: Requirements for un‑notched and notched specimen geometries, notch machining and ligament measurement.
- Apparatus and measurement: Use of calibrated tensile test machines, appropriate grips/load train, data recording systems, micrometers and ligament measuring devices (references to ISO 7500‑1 and ISO 3611 are included).
- Procedure and validity: Defined displacement rates, test technique, dimensional measurement, criteria for valid tests and data handling.
- Data analysis: Plotting notch sensitivity diagrams, determining tensile strengths for reference and notched specimens, and calculating Keq for different classes of behaviour (document differentiates class A, B, C behaviours).
- Test report: Required information to document results and ensure traceability.
Applications and who uses it
- Materials engineers and R&D teams evaluating new CMC formulations and fibre architectures.
- Test laboratories and quality control groups verifying batch consistency and mechanical performance.
- Aerospace, energy, and automotive designers needing reliable fracture/crack‑propagation data for component design and safety assessments.
- Standards committees and regulatory bodies comparing fracture sensitivity across materials for specification and certification. Practical uses include material selection, comparative benchmarking (via Keq), design allowables development, and failure analysis.
Related standards
- ISO 3611 (micrometers)
- ISO 7500‑1 (calibration/verification of tensile testing machines)
- ISO 15733 (mechanical properties of fine ceramics)
Using EN ISO 18608:2022 helps organizations obtain repeatable, comparable measures of crack‑propagation sensitivity in advanced ceramics and supports safer, better‑informed use of CMCs in critical applications.

Determination of the resistance to crack propagation by
notch sensitivity testing
1 Scope
This document describes a method for the classification of ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials
with respect to their sensitivity to crack propagation using tensile tests on notched specimens with
different notch depths. Two classes of ceramic matrix composite materials can be distinguished:
materials whose strength is sensitive to the presence of notches and materials whose strength is not
affected. For sensitive materials, this document defines a method for determining equivalent fracture
toughness.
The parameter, K , is defined as the fracture toughness of a homogeneous material which presents
eq
the same sensitivity to crack propagation as the ceramic matrix composite material which is being
considered. The definition of the K parameter offers the possibility to compare ceramic matrix
eq
composite materials with other materials with respect to sensitivity to crack propagation.
For notch insensitive materials, the concept of K does not apply.
eq
This document applies to all ceramic matrix composites with a continuous fibre reinforcement,
unidirectional (1 D), bidirectional (2 D), and tridirectional (x D, where 2 < x ≤ 3), loaded along one
