Overview
EN ISO 787-1:2017, titled General methods of test for pigments and extenders - Part 1: Comparison of colour of pigments, is a standardized procedure developed by CEN and ISO/TC 35 for assessing the colour consistency of coloured pigments. It specifies a comparison method between a test pigment and an agreed reference sample, ensuring reliable and reproducible colour evaluation. This standard replaces ISO/R 787/1:1968 and is widely recognized in the paint, coatings, and pigment manufacturing industries.
Key Topics
- Scope: Defines a general method for comparing pigment colour using either an automatic or a hand-operated muller, focusing on visual and instrumental evaluation against an agreed standard.
- Binder Use: The binder for pigment dispersion must be mutually agreed upon. If unspecified, refined linseed oil compliant with ISO 150 should be used, facilitating consistent sample preparation.
- Apparatus and Materials: Utilizes tools such as:
- Automatic muller with controlled force and rotational speed (reference method)
- Hand muller or palette knife for manual dispersion
- Standard substrates like glass or marble plates for sample spreading
- Burette for accurate binder dosing
- Sample Preparation: Detailed instructions on mixing pigment with binder to create uniform pastes, emphasizing consistency in paste thickness and texture for valid colour comparison.
- Colour Comparison Procedure: Involves spreading pigment pastes side-by-side on substrates and comparing them under diffuse daylight or controlled light conditions per ISO 3668 guidelines. Optionally, colorimeters may be used by agreement.
- Test Reporting: Mandates documentation of key parameters such as pigment identification, binder type, method used, test results, and any deviations, ensuring traceability and transparency.
Applications
- Quality Control in Pigment Production: Ensures batch-to-batch colour consistency, vital for manufacturer reputation and product performance.
- Paints and Coatings Industries: Helps manufacturers verify pigment colour matches specifications before formulation, preventing costly rework.
- Research and Development: Supports pigment and extender formulation optimization by providing reliable colour comparison methods.
- Contractual Agreements: Provides an objective means for suppliers and customers to agree on pigment colour standards, reducing disputes.
- Regulatory Compliance: Assists companies in meeting quality standards and industry regulations related to pigments and colour quality in coatings and related products.
Related Standards
- ISO 3668: Specifies methods for visual colour comparison of paints and varnishes, supplementing the comparison procedure defined in EN ISO 787-1.
- ISO 150: Defines quality and testing for raw and refined linseed oil used as a binder in pigment testing.
- ISO 842: Addresses sampling methods for raw materials like pigments to ensure representative testing samples.
- Other parts of ISO 787 series, including:
- Part 2: Determination of volatile matter
- Part 5: Determination of oil absorption
- Part 16: Comparison of relative tinting strength using an automatic muller
These provide a comprehensive framework for pigment and extender testing beyond colour comparison.
Keywords: pigment colour comparison, pigment testing standards, automatic muller method, binder for pigments, linseed oil binder, quality control pigments, ISO pigment test methods, paint pigment evaluation, CEN pigment standards.

Foreword IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards institutes (IS0 member bodies). The work of developing Inter- national Standards is carried out through IS0 technical committees. Every member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been set up has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by the IS0 Council. International Standard IS0 787/l was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, and was circulated to the member bodies in June 1980. It has been approved by the member bodies of the following countries: Australia Ireland Austria Israel Brazil Italy Canada Kenya China Korea, Rep. of Egypt, Arab Rep. of Netherlands India Norway Poland Romania South Africa, Rep. of Sweden Switzerland United Kingdom USSR The member bodies of on technical grounds : the following cou n tries expressed disapproval of the document France Germany, F. The purpose of this International Standard is to establish a series of general test methods for pigments and extenders which are suitable for all or many of the individual pigments and extenders for which specifications might be required. In such cases, a cross-reference to the general method should be included in the International Standard relating to that pigment or extender, with a note of any detailed modifications which might be needed in view of the special properties of the product in question. Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, decided that all the general methods should be published as they become available, as parts of a single Interna- tional Standard, in order to emphasize the relationship of each to the whole series. The Technical Committee also decided that, where two or more procedures were wide- ly used for determining the same or a similar characteristic of a pigment or extender, there would be no objection to including more than one of them in the IS0 series. In such cases it will, however, be essential to state clearly in a specification which method is to be used and, in the test report, which method has been used. Parts of the series already published are as follows : Part 1 : Comparison of colour of pigments Part 2 : Determination of matter volatile at 105 OC Part 3 : Determination of matter soluble in water - Hot extraction method Part 4 : Determination of acidity or alkalinity of the aqueous extract Part 5 : Determination of oil absorption value Fart 7 : Determination of residue on sieve - Water method - Manual procedure Part 8 : Determination of matter soluble in water - Cold extraction method Part 9 : Determination of pH value of an aqueous suspension Part 10 : Determination of density - Pyknometer method Part 11 : Determination of tamped volume and apparent density after tamping Part 13 : Determination of water-soluble sulphates, chlorides and nitrates Part 14 : Determination of resistivity of aqueous extract Part 15 : Comparison of resistance to light of coloured pigments of similar types Part 16 : Comparison of relative tinting strength (or equivalent colouring value) and colour on reduction in linseed stand oil using the automatic muller Part 17 : Comparison of lightening power of white pigments Part 18 : Determination of residue on sieve - Water me
