Overview

EN 3373-012:2005 is a European standard part of the aerospace series that specifies the product requirements for insulated and sealed in-line splices used for crimping on copper conductors. These in-line splices are designed for tin or silver plated copper conductors, as well as nickel plated copper conductors, operating at temperatures up to 150 °C. Developed under the governance of CEN (European Committee for Standardization) and aligned with aerospace industry needs, this standard ensures reliable electrical connections critical to aerospace applications.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
Defines characteristics of sealed, insulated, tin-plated, and nickel-plated in-line splices suitable for crimping copper conductors used within aerospace electrical wiring systems.

  • Materials and Construction

    • Crimp barrel: Copper alloy in accordance with ASTM B 75
    • Plating: Tin per ASTM B 545 or nickel per QQ-N-290A standards
    • Insulating sleeve: Radiation cross-linked polyvinylidene fluoride with meltable sealing rings to ensure environmental sealing
  • Temperature Ratings
Certified for operational use in temperature ranges from -65 °C up to 150 °C, accommodating harsh aerospace environments.

  • Dimensions and Color Coding
Detailed dimensional specifications and color code bands correspond to conductor size ranges, facilitating quick identification and compliance consistency.

  • Testing and Compliance

    • Electrical tests including dielectric withstand voltage of 2,500 volts DC for 1 minute
    • Leakage current less than 2 mA and insulation resistance over 5,000 MΩ
    • Temperature cycling and environmental durability tests consistent with aerospace industry standards
  • Assembly and Tooling
Specifies the use of crimping tools compliant with MIL-DTL-22520/37 and regulated heating devices for proper splice assembly.

  • Marking and Packaging
Items must be clearly marked with color bands indicating item codes and supplied in packaging with full traceability including standard designation, manufacturer details, part numbers, batch, and manufacturing dates.

Applications

EN 3373-012:2005 splices are essential components in aerospace electrical wiring harnesses offering:

  • Reliable Electrical Connections in harsh aerospace conditions, like rapid temperature changes and vibration environments
  • Sealed, Insulated Splicing for long-term protection against moisture, contaminants, and mechanical stress
  • Compatibility with High-Temperature Environments such as aircraft engine compartments and avionics bays
  • Usage in Aircraft, Spacecraft, and Defence Systems requiring adherence to stringent quality and safety standards for electrical connections
  • Maintenance and Replacement ensuring standardized parts allow for efficient troubleshooting and repairs in aerospace systems

Related Standards

  • EN 3373-001: Technical specifications for terminal lugs and in-line splices for crimping on electric conductors, providing complementary requirements to EN 3373-012
  • EN 2083: Aerospace standard for copper or copper alloy conductors in electrical cables, outlining conductor specifications that interface with these splices
  • EN 2591-305: Aerospace test methods for rapid change of temperature, addressing the environmental testing of splice assemblies
  • MIL-DTL-22520/37: U.S. military standard defining requirements for crimping tools used for electrical wire splicing
  • ASTM Standards: Including ASTM B 545 (tin plating) and ASTM B 75 (copper tube specification), supporting material quality compliance

By implementing EN 3373-012:2005, manufacturers and aerospace engineers ensure that in-line electrical splices meet rigorous quality, performance, and safety levels demanded by the aerospace industry, contributing to optimal reliability in critical electrical systems.
