Overview

CEN/TS 17762:2022 is a technical specification developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) focusing on the determination of copper content in ammonium nitrate fertilizers with high nitrogen content. This standard outlines a precise analytical method to quantify trace levels of copper using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) or inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). It ensures reliable and consistent testing, supporting quality control and regulatory compliance within the fertilizer industry.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Defines the procedure for measuring copper content specifically in ammonium nitrate fertilizers with elevated nitrogen levels.
  • Analytical Principle: The method involves dissolving fertilizer samples in dilute hydrochloric acid followed by copper quantification using AAS or ICP-OES.
  • Reagents: Utilizes high purity reagents such as hydrochloric acid, hydrogen peroxide, and ammonium nitrate, plus standardized copper solutions for calibration.
  • Apparatus: Requires laboratory equipment including a copper-specific atomic absorption spectrophotometer or ICP-OES, precision balances, glassware, and copper-free filter paper.
  • Sample Preparation: Refers to EN 1482-2 for sample handling and preparation ensuring consistency in testing.
  • Calibration: Mandates preparation of a series of copper standard solutions with ammonium nitrate to match the sample matrix, enabling accurate quantitative analysis.
  • Measurement Conditions: Specifies optimal wavelength (324.8 nm for copper in AAS) and flame type, or ICP-OES parameters, to maximize detection sensitivity.
  • Result Expression: Copper content results must be calculated based on sample mass, dilutions, and blank corrections, reported in mg/kg.

Applications

  • Fertilizer Quality Control: Provides manufacturers and testing laboratories with a standardized method to routinely measure copper contamination or enrichment in ammonium nitrate fertilizers.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensures fertilizer products meet European safety and composition regulations by accurate monitoring of trace copper levels.
  • Environmental Safety: Monitoring copper aids in controlling potential heavy metal accumulation in soils, protecting agricultural ecosystems.
  • Research and Development: Supports formulation improvement and trace metal analysis in high nitrogen fertilizers during product development.

Related Standards

  • EN 1482-1 & EN 1482-2: Standards covering sampling and sample preparation of fertilizers, essential for obtaining representative and uncontaminated samples before copper analysis.
  • EN 12944-1 & EN 12944-2: Provide standardized vocabulary relating to fertilizers and liming materials, ensuring consistent terminology use within the industry.
  • EN ISO 3696: Specifies water quality standards for analytical laboratory use, critical for reagent preparation and dilution steps in copper determination.

By adhering to CEN/TS 17762:2022, stakeholders in the fertilizer supply chain achieve precise, repeatable copper quantification in ammonium nitrate fertilizers. This fosters product reliability, regulatory alignment, and sustainable agricultural practices. Keywords such as copper content determination, ammonium nitrate fertilizers, high nitrogen fertilizers, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and ICP-OES analysis are integral to this standardized analytical method.
