This document specifies requirements for the safety, strength and durability of bunk beds and high beds for domestic and non-domestic use.
It is applicable to bunk beds and high beds with an internal length greater than 1 400 mm and a maximum bed base width of 1 200 mm, and with the upper surface of a bed base of 600 mm or more above the floor.
This document does not apply to bunk beds and high beds used for special purposes, including but not limited to prisons, the military and fire brigades.
If other products are included in a bunk bed/high bed, for example a table or storage furniture, the relevant European Standards could, in addition, apply.
The document contains one annex:

Dieses Dokument legt Anforderungen an die Sicherheit, Festigkeit und Dauerhaltbarkeit von Etagenbetten und Hochbetten für den Wohn- und Nicht-Wohnbereich fest.
Dieses Dokument ist anwendbar für Etagenbetten und Hochbetten mit einer inneren Länge von mehr als 1 400 mm und einer Höchstbreite des Bettbodens von 1 200 mm, bei denen sich die Oberseite des Bettbodens 600 mm oder mehr über der Stellfläche befindet.
Dieses Dokument ist nicht anwendbar für Etagenbetten und Hochbetten für besondere Zwecke, unter anderem, aber nicht nur, für Gefängnisse, Kasernen und Feuerwachen.
Wenn in einem Etagenbett/Hochbett noch andere Produkte enthalten sind, z. B. ein Tisch oder ein Behältnismöbel, könnten zusätzlich die entsprechenden Europäischen Normen anwendbar sein.

Le présent document spécifie les exigences relatives à la sécurité, à la résistance et à la durabilité des lits superposés et des lits surélevés à usage domestique et collectif.
Il s’applique aux lits superposés et aux lits surélevés dont la longueur intérieure est supérieure à 1 400 mm, dont la largeur du sommier est inférieure ou égale à 1 200 mm et dont la face supérieure du sommier se trouve au moins à 600 mm au-dessus du sol. Ta dokument določa zahteve za varnost, trdnost ter trajnost pogradov in visokih postelj za domačo in javno rabo.
Uporablja se za pograde in visoke postelje z notranjo dolžino več kot 1400 mm, največjo širino osnove 1200 mm in zgornjo površino posteljnega dna 600 mm ali več nad tlemi. This document (EN 747-1:2024) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 207 “Furniture”,
the secretariat of which is held by UNI.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by September 2024, and conflicting national standards shall
be withdrawn at the latest by September 2024.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. CEN shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

1 Scope
This document specifies requirements for the safety, strength and durability of bunk beds and high beds
for domestic and non-domestic use.

4 Safety requirements
4.1 Construction
4.1.1 General
When the bed is fully assembled, accessible edges and corners shall be rounded or chamfered and free
from burrs or sharp edges.
There shall be no open-ended tubes.
All assembly and pilot holes shall be made by the manufacturer.
There shall be no clothes hooks or similar items more than 600 mm from the floor.
If the lowest point of the vertically protruding parts are above 600 mm from the floor, they shall either
a) have an uninterrupted minimum horizontal dimension of 300 mm in at least one direction without
any other vertical protrusion (see Figure 1 a), or
b) have an uninterrupted vertical dimension of at least 600 mm measured from the highest adjacent
part (see Figure 1 b), or
c) where the largest dimension is 50 mm or more (see Figure 1), have a maximum height at which a
line, drawn at 45° touches it, of not more than 5 mm above at least one adjacent/adjoining horizontal
component; the maximum vertical protrusion above that component shall not exceed 20 % of the
largest horizontal dimension of parts (see Figure 1 c), or
d) where the largest dimension is less than 50 mm, have a maximum height at which a line, drawn at
45° touches it, of not more than 5 mm above at least one adjacent/adjoining horizontal component;
the maximum vertical protrusion above that component shall not exceed 10 mm (see Figure 1) of
parts (see Figure 1 d).
It shall not be possible to dismantle the bed or its components without the use of a tool.
The dimensional requirements in this clause apply both before and after testing without re-tightening.

4.1.2 Accessible holes, gaps and openings
4.1.2.1 General
There shall be no accessible completely bound openings in rigid material with a diameter/width greater
than 7 mm and less than 12 mm, unless the depth is less than 10 mm or unless the shape assessment
probe (EN 747-2:2024, 5.2.2) enters when tested according to 6.3.1 of EN 747-2:2024.
Additionally, accessible completely bound openings in bed bases, safety barriers, and treads shall fulfil the
requirements specified in the respective clauses, i.e. 4.1.3, 4.1.4 and 4.1.5.
