Plastics - Determination of resistance to environmental stress cracking (ESC) - Part 5: Constant tensile deformation method (ISO 22088-5:2006)
ISO 22088-5:2006 specifies a method for the determination of the environmental stress cracking (ESC) behaviour of thermoplastics when they are subjected to a constant tensile deformation in the presence of a chemical medium.
It is applicable to test specimens prepared by moulding and/or machining and can be used for the assessment of the ESC behaviour of plastic materials exposed to different environments, as well as for the determination of the ESC behaviour of different plastic materials exposed to a specific environment.
This is essentially a ranking test and is not intended to provide data to be used for design or performance prediction.
Alternative methods for the determination of environmental stress cracking by means of a constant-strain test are specified in ISO 22088-3 and ISO 22088-4. A method for the determination of environmental stress cracking by means of a constant tensile load is specified in ISO 22088-2.

Overview
EN ISO 22088-5:2009 - Plastics: Determination of resistance to environmental stress cracking (ESC) - Part 5: Constant tensile deformation method (ISO 22088-5:2006) specifies a laboratory method to assess how thermoplastics behave when held at a constant tensile deformation in contact with a chemical medium. The method is intended as a ranking test to compare materials or environments and is not intended for design or performance prediction.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applicable to thermoplastic specimens produced by moulding and/or machining for assessing ESC behaviour across different environments or materials.
- Test principle: A specimen is strained to a constant deformation (below yield) and immersed in a chosen chemical medium; stress relaxation curves and the critical stress (maximum stress that does not alter the relaxation curve) are used as ESC indices.
- Apparatus: Device to maintain constant tensile deformation (examples include worm-gear clamps, load cell/strain gauge-accuracy ±1%) and chemically resistant parts (stainless steel, PTFE). Temperature-controlled bath/oven required to maintain test temperature (typical reference 23 ±2 °C up to 100 °C ±2 °C).
- Specimen preparation & conditioning: Specimens prepared by injection/compression moulding or machining per referenced ISO moulding/machining standards; the standard specifies conditioning prior to test (standard references include typical 24 h conditioning).
- Test media & temperature: Test medium selection and immersion conditions are defined; containers must be chemically compatible and sealable for volatile media.
- Data & interpretation: Compare critical stress in chemical vs air and evaluate shape changes of stress relaxation curves to classify ESC severity (qualitative and relative quantitative indices).
- Limitations: Intended for ranking/comparative assessment only; not a direct predictor of in-service lifetime.
Practical applications and users
- Useful for material selection, screening and comparative ranking of thermoplastics exposed to chemicals (e.g., packaging, piping, tanks).
- Employed in R&D labs, polymer formulation development, quality control, and failure analysis to detect susceptibility to environmental stress cracking.
- Relevant to manufacturers, test laboratories, OEMs and standards bodies needing a standardized method to compare ESC resistance across materials or environments.

ISO 22088-5:2006(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 22088-5 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 61, Plastics, Subcommittee SC 6, Ageing,
chemical and environmental resistance.
ISO 22088 consists of the following parts, under the general title Plastics — Determination of resistance to
environmental stress cracking (ESC):
