Fixed firefighting systems - Gas extinguishing systems - Part 7: Physical properties and system design of gas extinguishing systems for IG-01 extinguishant

This document gives specific requirements for gaseous fire-extinguishing systems, with respect to the IG-01 extinguishant. It includes details of physical properties, specification, usage and safety aspects and is applicable to systems operating at nominal pressure of 160 bar, 200 bar and 300 bar at 15 °C. This does not preclude the use of other systems; however, design data for other pressures were not available at time of publication.

Overview

prEN 15004-7 (CEN) provides specific requirements for gaseous fire-extinguishing systems using the IG-01 extinguishant. IG-01 is an inert, colourless and odourless gas (chemical name: argon) with a molecular mass of 39.9 and is used primarily in total-flooding applications to reduce oxygen concentration and extinguish fires. The part covers physical properties, specification (purity ≥ 99.9 %), system design data for containers filled at 160 bar, 200 bar and 300 bar (at 15 °C), safety for personnel and environmental properties (zero GWP, zero ODP).

Key Topics

  • Physical properties and specification

    • Purity: minimum 99.9 % by volume
    • Molecular mass: 39.9; boiling point: −185.9 °C; argon-based inert gas
    • Physiological guidance: NOAEL 43 % by volume; LOAEL 52 % by volume (equivalent to approx. 12 % and 10 % minimum oxygen levels)
  • System design and storage

    • Nominal container fill pressures considered: 160 bar, 200 bar, 300 bar (15 °C)
    • Maximum working pressures at 50 °C: 188 bar (160 fill), 235 bar (200 fill), 362 bar (300 fill)
    • Containers are not superpressurized; fill pressures must not exceed specified values
  • Extinguishing and design concentrations

    • IG-01 extinguishes by oxygen reduction; tables in the standard provide required agent quantities per m3 for a range of temperatures and target concentrations
    • Example reference concentrations: heptane extinguishment ~39.1 % (design concentration 51.7 % with safety factor); surface Class A (e.g., wood crib) ~30.7 %
    • Design practice applies a safety factor (typically 1.3 on extinguishing concentration) and uses the volume/temperature tables and formulas in EN 15004-1/7
  • Safety considerations

    • Personnel hazards from oxygen reduction and fire combustion products must be addressed per EN 15004-1
    • System design should incorporate warning, evacuation and safe-entry procedures based on NOAEL/LOAEL guidance

Applications

IG-01 systems are intended for fixed firefighting installations where total-flooding inert gas suppression is required. Typical applications include:

  • Data centres, server rooms and telecommunications enclosures
  • Archive rooms, museums and spaces with sensitive equipment or documents
  • Industrial hazard enclosures where electrical non-conductivity and inerting are required

Benefits include effective total-flooding suppression, electrical non-conductivity and negligible environmental impact (zero GWP/ODP).

Related Standards

  • EN 15004-1 - General requirements for gaseous fire-extinguishing systems (normative reference)
  • Other parts of EN 15004 cover specific extinguishants (FK-5-1-12, HFCs, IG series) and provide complementary test, installation and maintenance guidance

For designers and safety managers, prEN 15004-7 is used together with EN 15004-1 to calculate agent quantities, select storage pressure options, verify personnel safety margins and confirm environmental compliance when specifying IG-01 fixed firefighting systems.
