Overview
EN 12503-7:2001 specifies a laboratory method for the determination of static stiffness of type 12 sports mats (referenced in EN 12503-3:2001). The procedure provides repeatable, documented measurements that support safety verification, quality control and compliance for indoor sports equipment such as judo mats.
This standard is part of the EN 12503 series covering sports mats and complements tests for shock absorption and friction.
Key Topics
Principle
- An indentor is applied to the mat under a specified mass and the deflection under the indentor is measured relative to the deflection at a set radius (normalised deflection).
Apparatus and dimensions
- Load applied through an indentor of 78 mm diameter (as specified in EN 12503-4).
- Total applied mass: (50 ± 0,5) kg.
- Measurement uses a circular plate 160 mm diameter with a central hole 80 mm diameter and a scale attached to the indentor to read deflection in millimetres.
Test piece and conditioning
- The test piece is the complete mat.
- Condition test pieces for a minimum of 24 h at (21 ± 3) °C immediately before testing; perform tests at the same temperature.
Procedure
- Place the indentor on the top surface under the specified load.
- Measure the difference between deflection at the centre and at diameter 160 ± 1 mm, 2 min ± 5 s after applying the load.
- Repeat at four positions approximately at the centre of each quarter of the mat.
- Note: positions used for static stiffness must not coincide with those used for shock absorption (EN 12503-4).
Expression of results
- Report the mean of the measured deflections. Record individual test values if required.
Test report requirements (minimum):
- Standard reference (EN 12503-7), mat identification (type, manufacturer, history), test temperature, mean deflection, individual values (if required) and any deviations from the procedure.
Applications
- Verification of safety and performance for judo and other indoor sports mats
- Quality assurance and factory acceptance testing
- Procurement specifications and conformity checks
- Comparative evaluation during product development and selection
