Overview

EN 14959:2006 (CEN) specifies a reproducible laboratory method to determine the resistance to fraying of touch-and-close fasteners (hook-and-loop style closures) after domestic washing. The standard supports durability assessment, quality control and conformity checks for textile products and accessories that use touch-and-close fasteners.

This procedure defines specimen preparation, conditioning, closure simulation and washing, and a simple visual/count evaluation of loose filaments remaining on cut edges.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Method for determining resistance to fraying of touch and close fasteners after washing.
  • Principle: Cut a male or female component longitudinally, secure it to a loading fabric, assemble with its counterpart, simulate closure with a metal roller, wash per EN ISO 6330 and then count loose filaments on the edges.
  • Apparatus and materials (as specified in the standard):
    • Long pair of scissors to cut 50 mm samples in one stroke.
    • Loading fabric: polyester/cotton (50 %/50 %) at 130 g/m2.
    • Washing machine conforming to EN ISO 6330.
    • Metal roller as specified in EN 12241 to simulate closure.
  • Specimen dimensions:
    • Tape to be tested: 50 mm length after cutting.
    • Counterpart tape: 70 mm length.
    • Loading fabric: 75 mm length; width = sample width + 25 mm.
  • Conditioning: Minimum 24 h in standard temperate atmosphere per EN ISO 139. All handling, drying and evaluation take place under these conditions.
  • Procedure specifics:
    • Cut the tape at 90° to the longitudinal axis and along its axis in one stroke.
    • Sew the tape to the loading fabric on two longitudinal edges and one transverse edge, with 3 stitches/cm at 1.5 mm from the edge using needle number 0,80 and polyester yarn 30 tex.
    • Close using the metal roller (per EN 12241), traverse in one direction then immediately reverse, then enclose in a loading bag and wash per EN ISO 6330.
    • After washing and drying (24 h under specified atmosphere) open and close the fastener by hand five times and count loose filaments on the four tape edges.

Applications

  • Product development: Evaluate closure designs for fraying resistance during wash cycles.
  • Quality control: Routine batch testing to monitor production consistency.
  • Compliance and documentation: Provide test evidence for technical files, labels and supplier agreements.

Related Standards

  • EN 12241 - Method for closure prior to washing and drying; metal roller specification and closure simulation.
  • EN ISO 6330 - Domestic washing and drying procedures for textile testing.
  • EN ISO 139 - Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing.

Reporting and Practical Value

The test report shall include the standard reference (EN 14959:2006), date of test, fastener identification, deviations or incidents, and the fraying evaluation result. Using EN 14959:2006 enables consistent, comparable fraying assessments across laboratories and manufacturers, supporting reliable durability claims for touch-and-close fasteners.
