Overview

CEN/TR 15118:2005 - "Testing guidelines for touch and close fasteners" is a CEN Technical Report produced by CEN/TC 248 (Textiles and textile products) and approved in 2005. It provides guidance on methods for integrating touch-and-close fasteners (hook-and-loop style closures) into finished products and recommends appropriate test methods to verify performance after different types of attachment (sewing, mechanical, adhesives, heat activation, welding, moulding-in, straps and non-continuous applications).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Integration methods covered: sewing, mechanical attachment, pressure-sensitive adhesive, heat-activated, welded attachment, moulding in, straps, and non-continuous application in various widths.
  • Test guidance is organized into four characteristic groups (Table 1):
    • A - Construction characteristics (identification of materials, overall and effective widths, edge types)
    • B - Mechanical resistance and usage (longitudinal shear strength, peel strength, breaking strength/elongation, behaviour after washing/dry-cleaning, dimensional stability, curvature)
    • C - Colour fastness (light, washing, dry cleaning)
    • D - Particular behaviour (customer or sector-specific tests such as burning or flame behaviour)
  • References to established EN/ISO test methods are recommended for specific measurements:
    • Peel (EN 12242), Longitudinal shear (EN 13780), Dimensional change (EN 12243), Widths (EN 12240), Curvature (EN 1416), Slit selvedges (EN 1415)
    • Colour fastness standards: EN ISO 105-B02, EN ISO 105-C06, EN ISO 105-D01
    • Textile tensile testing reference: EN ISO 13934-1

Practical applications and users

Who uses CEN/TR 15118:2005:

  • Textile and apparel manufacturers selecting attachment methods for closures
  • Footwear, accessory and soft-goods designers specifying fastener integration
  • Quality and test laboratories performing peel, shear and durability testing
  • OEMs in transport, aerospace and consumer products needing evidence of durability, colour fastness and flame or burning behaviour (see sector-specific tests cited) Practical uses:
  • Choosing the correct attachment method (e.g., adhesive vs. sewing) based on expected loads, washing/dry-cleaning exposure and dimensional stability
  • Defining test programs for product verification and compliance
  • Informing design decisions to improve longevity, safety and consumer performance

Introduction
A large and growing variety of touch and close fasteners exist on the market. They differ by the nature of their
raw materials, their construction, the type of gripping elements and in their performance, e.g. shear strength,
peel, cycling and cleaning.
To ensure that a touch and close fastener of a particular type is suitable for the consumer's end product, the
guidelines recommend that different procedures are followed to ensure that the chosen type of attachment is
appropriate.
