Aerospace series - Circuit breakers, single-pole, temperature compensated, rated current 1 A to 25 A - Part 004: With signal contact - Product standard

This standard specifies the characteristics of single-pole circuit breakers, temperature compensated with a rated current from 1 A to 25 A, used in aircraft on-board circuits at a temperature between – 55 °C and 125 °C and at an altitude of 22 000 m max.
These circuit breakers are operated by a push-pull type single push button (actuator), with delayed action "trip-free" tripping with a signal contact which is open when main contacts are closed, and inversely.
They will continue to function up to the short-circuit current.

Overview

EN 2995-004:2006 is the CEN product standard for aerospace single‑pole, temperature‑compensated circuit breakers with a signal contact. It covers units rated from 1 A to 25 A, designed for aircraft on‑board circuits operating between −55 °C and 125 °C and at altitudes up to 22 000 m. The breakers use a push‑pull single push‑button actuator and provide delayed action, trip‑free tripping while maintaining a signal contact that is open when the main contacts are closed (and vice versa).

Key Topics

  • Rated range and environment: 1 A to 25 A; operation −55 °C to 125 °C; max altitude 22 000 m.
  • Actuation and safety: Push‑pull single push button with delayed-action, trip‑free tripping and a dedicated signal contact for status monitoring.
  • Electrical ratings: Nominal voltages include 28 V d.c. and 115 V a.c. (360–800 Hz). Signal circuit parameters and low‑current performance for monitoring are defined.
  • Mechanical and installation data: Typical mass is ≤ 28 g (delivery code A with hardware). Recommended attaching nut torque ≈ 4.75 Nm; connection hardware torque ≈ 1.6 Nm. Panel cut‑out and attachment follow TR 6083 and EN 2995-001.
  • Performance: Continued operation under short‑circuit conditions, specified voltage drops at rated and low currents, tripping thresholds across ambient conditions, vibration and shock resistance, and defined endurance cycles for main and signal contacts.

Applications

These circuit breakers are specified for use where reliable overcurrent protection, environmental robustness and status signalling are required in aerospace electrical systems. Typical applications include:

  • Protection of aircraft on‑board circuits and subsystems where temperature and altitude extremes apply.
  • Panels requiring local indication of breaker status via the signal contact for flight‑deck or system monitoring.
  • Systems demanding trip‑free behaviour to ensure safe interruption under overload and short‑circuit conditions.

Benefits to engineers and procurement teams:

  • Consistent, interoperable hardware per a harmonised European aerospace product standard.
  • Defined mechanical and electrical interfaces to simplify installation and maintenance.
  • Clear performance metrics for design validation and qualification testing.

  • EN 3155-016 - Electrical contact types relevant to terminals.
  • EN 6113 - Connecting and attachment hardware for circuit breakers.
  • TR 6083 - Panel cut‑outs for installation of electrical components.
