Overview

EN 12447:2021 - Geotextiles and geotextile-related products - specifies a screening test method to determine the resistance of geotextiles and related products to hydrolysis in water. The standard exposes specimens to deionised water at elevated temperature (80 ± 2 °C) and evaluates changes in mechanical properties after exposure. It is intended to establish a minimum acceptable level of durability, particularly for materials susceptible to internal hydrolysis such as polyester and polyamide fibres.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test principle: Immersion of test and control specimens in hot deionised water followed by mechanical evaluation (retained and reference strength).
  • Temperature and medium: Use deionised water (EN ISO 3696, class 3) at (80 ± 2) °C; temperature recorded at least once daily.
  • Specimens:
    • Minimum of five test and five control specimens per test direction (machine and cross-machine unless otherwise agreed).
    • Coated materials: test without coating; manufacturer must ensure coating degradation does not influence yarn hydrolysis.
    • Yarn specimens may be tested wound loosely on inert tubes.
  • Apparatus: Containers of inert material (stainless steel or borosilicate glass); total specimen volume ≤ 10% of container free space; mass of water : mass of specimens ≥ 30:1.
  • Control exposure: Control specimens immersed for 6 hours, then stored in the dark at room temperature.
  • Test durations: Provides screening durations mapped to nominal service-life estimates in natural soils (pH 4–9, soil temp ≤ 25 °C):
    • Reinforcement/long-term strength applications: 28 d → 25 y; 56 d → 50 y; 112 d → 100 y.
    • Other applications: 14 d → 25 y; 28 d → 50 y; 56 d → 100 y.
  • Post-exposure conditioning: At least 16 h at (20 ± 2) °C and (65 ± 5)% RH before mechanical testing.
  • Limitations: Screening tests do not provide reduction factors and are not intended for highly acidic or alkaline hydrolysis conditions.

Applications

  • Quality control and durability screening of geotextiles, geocomposites and yarns used in drainage, reinforcement, filtration and soil separation.
  • Early verification of product susceptibility to hydrolytic degradation for polyester and polyamide based geosynthetics.
  • Input to product development, specification compliance and acceptance testing where a minimum hydrolysis resistance level is required.

Introduction
This document describes a screening test method to establish a minimum acceptance level of resistance
of geotextiles and geotextile-related products to soil moisture.
In certain polymers moisture leads to hydrolysis throughout the thickness of the fibre (internal
hydrolysis) but the rate of degradation is such that over short periods it is only measurable at elevated
temperatures, e.g. by immersion in hot water.

The EN 12447:2021 standard provides a critical screening test method designed to assess the resistance of geotextiles and geotextile-related products to hydrolysis when exposed to water under elevated temperatures. Its scope is well-defined, targeting the evaluation of changes in properties following this exposure, thereby establishing a minimum acceptable level of durability for these materials. One of the primary strengths of the standard lies in its applicability to a broad range of geotextiles, particularly those made from polyester and polyamide. This inclusion ensures that the standard is relevant to various product types within the geotextile industry, making it an essential document for manufacturers and users alike. Additionally, the standard clearly delineates that the tests are screening tests; it focuses on demonstrating the ability of these products to maintain performance over a certain timeframe without quantifying reduction factors, which aligns with its objective of determining durability rather than precise performance metrics. The EN 12447:2021 also directs users to perform complementary strength evaluations in accordance with EN 12226, thus ensuring a comprehensive approach to performance assessment. However, it is essential to note that the standard does not apply to conditions involving highly acidic or alkaline environments, which is a limitation that practitioners should be aware of when considering the effectiveness of geotextile products in challenging conditions. Moreover, the standard's method is designed in such a way that it could potentially serve as a basis for further performance tests aimed at predicting longevity or benchmarking different products concerning hydrolysis resistance. This flexibility adds to its relevance in the ongoing development of geotextile technology. Overall, the EN 12447:2021 is a robust and pertinent standard for anyone involved with geotextiles, providing a clear methodology for assessing hydrolysis resistance and contributing positively to the improvement of material durability in various applications.
