Overview

EN 6036:2015 is a CEN (Aerospace series) test method for determining the compression strength of fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) in notched, unnotched and filled‑hole configurations. Applicable to composite laminates with unidirectional layers or woven fabric reinforcement, the standard defines specimen types, test apparatus, conditioning, test procedure and the presentation of results used for material characterization, qualification and engineering design.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Specimen types: Notched, unnotched and filled‑hole compression specimens (detailed dimensions and laminate lay‑ups are specified).
  • Laminate prep: Panels produced per referenced production standards for carbon and glass (see Related Standards). Thickness variation within a laminate must be < 2%.
  • Number of tests: Typically five specimens per test condition unless otherwise specified.
  • Conditioning: Default storage/testing at (23 ± 2) °C, (50 ± 5) % RH (EN 2743). Aged/immersed specimens require specific conditioning and testing time windows.
  • Test machine & setup: Compression machine accurate to 1 %, alignment within 1°, use of suitable grips or compression jig; crosshead speed 0.5 mm/min; temperature control and thermocouple when testing non‑ambient conditions.
  • Measurements & calculations: Record maximum load and specimen dimensions (thickness, width). Calculate notched, unnotched and filled‑hole compression strengths (load divided by cross‑section), and report K values (ratios expressing residual strength: unnotched/filled‑hole and unnotched/notched).
  • Reporting: Full material ID, specimen prep and tab details, dimensions, ageing/exposure, test parameters, individual values, mean, standard deviation, K values and any deviations or incidents.

Practical applications

  • Qualification and comparison of aerospace composite materials and lay‑ups.
  • Establishing design allowables and damage tolerance parameters for fastened or damaged composite structures.
  • Quality control and batch acceptance testing for composite panels and bonded joints.
  • Validation of repairs, filled‑hole repairs and fastener interactions in composite assemblies.
  • Input to structural analyses where residual compression strength around holes or notches is critical.

Who uses this standard

  • Aerospace materials engineers and structural analysts
  • Composite test laboratories and OEM qualification teams
  • Manufacturers of carbon/glass fibre reinforced panels
  • Certification bodies and procurement/specification writers

Related standards

  • EN 2374 (glass fibre reinforced mouldings production of test panels)
  • EN 2565 (preparation of carbon fibre reinforced panels)
  • EN 2743 (conditioning prior to testing)
  • EN 2489, EN 2823 (fluid immersion and humidity exposure procedures)

EN 6036:2015 is an essential method for anyone assessing compression performance of composite laminates with through‑hole or notch damage in aerospace applications.
