Overview

EN ISO 9539:2010 (ISO 9539:2010) specifies material requirements for gas welding equipment used in gas welding, cutting and allied processes. It covers general and some special requirements for metallic and non‑metallic materials used in components that contact process gases. The standard helps manufacturers, designers and safety engineers select materials that ensure chemical, mechanical and thermal compatibility across typical operating conditions.

Keywords: ISO 9539, gas welding equipment materials, materials for gas welding, oxygen compatibility, acetylene safety

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Scope and general requirements

    • Materials in contact with process gases must resist chemical, mechanical and thermal effects across −20 °C to +60 °C.
    • Prevent galvanic or corrosive attack where dissimilar materials contact each other.
  • Metallic materials

    • For acetylene and similar gases: copper content of materials in contact with these gases shall not exceed 70% (mass fraction) to limit acetylide formation; manufacturers must avoid surface copper enrichment. (Nozzle and blowpipe neck exceptions.)
    • Metal flame‑arresting elements must be copper‑free.
    • Limits for brazing alloys used in gas‑contact areas: silver ≤ 46%, copper ≤ 37% (mass fraction); brazed joints must minimise exposed brazing area and remove flux residues.
    • For oxygen service: select materials for ignition resistance and low release of ignition energy; aluminium alloys are not permitted for oxygen contact above 30 bar (except aluminium sealing washers for pressure gauges).
    • Filters used at cylinder pressure must be non‑flammable; springs and moving parts must resist oxidation and must not be coated.
  • Cleaning and contamination control

    • Components in contact with oxygen must meet hydrocarbon cleanliness limits (as specified in ISO 9539:2010) and be manufactured or cleaned using validated processes; ISO 15001 offers cleaning guidance.
  • Non‑metallic materials

    • Seals and lubricants in contact with acetylene must resist acetone and DMF; those for propane/butane/MAPP must resist n‑pentane.
    • “Adequate resistance” is verified by ISO 1817 swelling and hardness tests under defined conditioning cycles.
    • Non‑metallics must be tested for ignition resistance in oxygen (e.g., ISO 11114‑3) and for ageing (e.g., ISO 2440).
    • Only oxygen‑compatible lubricants may be used; components must be free from hydrocarbon residues.

Applications and Users

  • Equipment manufacturers (torches, valves, regulators, fittings, flame arrestors)
  • Product designers and materials engineers specifying components for gas welding and cutting
  • Safety and quality managers ensuring oxygen compatibility and acetylene safety
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies validating materials and cleaning processes
  • Procurement teams selecting certified components for industrial welding systems

Related Standards

  • ISO 3821 (hoses)
  • ISO 11114‑1/2/3 (material compatibility and ignition tests)
  • ISO 15001 (cleaning for oxygen compatibility)
  • ISO 1817 (rubber solvent resistance)
  • ISO 2440 (ageing tests)
  • ISO 554 (standard atmospheres)

Using EN ISO 9539:2010 supports safer, compliant design and material selection for gas welding equipment, reducing ignition and corrosion risks while improving component reliability.

ISO 9539:2010(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 9539 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 44, Welding and allied processes, Subcommittee
SC 8, Equipment for gas welding, cutting and allied processes.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 9539:1988) which has been technically revised.
