Overview
EN 750:2004 - published by CEN - defines functional and safety requirements and test methods for outdoor hockey goals. The standard covers two goal types (Type 1: with ground sockets; Type 2: freestanding) intended for training and competition. EN 750:2004 specifies construction, materials, net properties, strength and stability tests, assembly/maintenance information, warning labels and product marking to ensure player safety and reliable on-field performance.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to outdoor hockey goals; indoor goals are covered by EN 749.
- Classification: Two types - goals with ground sockets (Type 1) and freestanding goals (Type 2).
- Materials and construction:
- Frames and backboards may be timber, steel, light metal or plastic if requirements are met.
- Net-supporting brackets and bottom bars: light metal or steel with corrosion protection (hot-dip galvanised, powder coated or painted).
- Nets may use synthetic or natural yarns.
- Nets and ropes:
- Net physical properties and classes are specified with minimum mesh-breaking strength values (e.g., classes A, B, C) and net head-line rope breaking forces (classes Z/Y), tested to EN ISO 1806 and prEN ISO 2307.
- Safety features:
- Edges and corners rounded to a radius of about 3 mm to reduce injury risk.
- Net fixings designed so players cannot be hurt (external openings ≤ 8 mm or ≥ 25 mm). Metal cup hooks prohibited; spring hooks must have screw caps.
- Frame entrapment limits for supports above 1200 mm (minimum downward angle and opening sizes).
- Strength and stability tests:
- Strength: apply a vertical force of 1 800 N at the centre of the crossbar for 1 minute; permanent deformation must not exceed 10 mm and there must be no fracture.
- Stability: apply a horizontal force of 1 100 N at the top centre of the crossbar for 1 minute (using a 3 000 mm rope); the goal must not tilt or slide.
- Documentation and marking:
- Manufacturers must supply assembly, installation and maintenance instructions and fit a permanent warning label (usage and safety warnings).
- Goals must be marked with EN 750 number, manufacturer/trademark and year of manufacture.
Applications and users
EN 750:2004 is useful for:
- Hockey goal manufacturers - product design, materials selection and conformity claims.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - carrying out prescribed strength and stability tests.
- Sports facility managers, clubs and procurement teams - specifying safe, regulation-compliant outdoor goals for training and competition.
- Safety officers and event organizers - ensuring goals are installed, secured and maintained per the standard.
