Overview

EN 16962:2018 (CEN) specifies a standardized laboratory method for the extraction of water‑soluble micro‑nutrients (boron, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum and zinc) from mineral fertilizers and for the removal of organic compounds from those water extracts. The method covers procedures for fertilizers with micro‑nutrient contents both ≤ 10 % and > 10 %, and defines preparation, extraction, acidification and optional organic‑matter removal steps so extracts can be reliably analysed by ICP‑AES, FAAS or spectrophotometric/gravi metric methods.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Extraction of water‑soluble forms of B, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Zn and removal of organic matter when required.
  • Extraction principle: Shake fertilizer in water at (20 ± 2) °C for 60 minutes; adjust shaking intensity to prevent settling.
  • Sample sizes and water ratios:
    • For micro‑nutrient content ≤ 10 %: 5.00 g sample + 250 ml water.
    • For micro‑nutrient content > 10 %: 2.00 g sample + 500 ml water.
  • Acidification: After extraction, acidify extracts to a final 0.5 mol/L nitric acid concentration (or HCl 0.5 mol/L where specified, e.g., some molybdenum determinations or if Fe precipitation occurs).
  • Removal of organic compounds (optional): Oxidize with hydrogen peroxide, allow reaction at room temperature, then boil to completion; re‑acidify and dilute as specified before analysis.
  • Materials and apparatus: Use plastic or silica ware (avoid borosilicate glass for boron determinations), ash‑free filter paper or centrifugation, controlled shaker and hotplate.
  • Storage: Acidified extracts can be stored in tightly closed plastic vessels for up to 15 days.
  • Quality/precision: Precision assessed in inter‑laboratory studies; measurement precision data published in EN 16963 (ICP‑AES) and EN 16965 (FAAS).
  • Safety & competence: Tests require trained laboratory staff and standard laboratory safety practices.

Applications and users

This standard is practical for:

  • Fertilizer manufacturers and QC laboratories performing routine micro‑nutrient release testing.
  • Accredited testing labs preparing extracts for ICP‑AES, FAAS or spectrophotometric analysis.
  • Regulatory bodies and conformity assessment organizations verifying compliance with fertilizer regulations.
  • Agronomy laboratories and R&D groups evaluating water‑soluble micro‑nutrient availability.

EN 16962 ensures consistent extraction and sample preparation so analytical results (e.g., water‑soluble nutrient content) are comparable across laboratories and suitable for regulatory, quality control and research purposes.
