They are intended for use in airframe fixed and moving elements and in flight control linkages.
The bearings defined in this standard shall be used in the temperature range from - 54 °C to 150 °C.
However, as they are lubricated with the following greases (see EN 3727):
ester type very high pressure grease (code letter A), operating range from - 73 °C to 121 °C or,
synthetic hydrocarbons type very high pressure grease general purpose (code letter B) operating range from - 54 °C to 177 °C.
Their field of application when lubricated with code letter A grease is limited to 121 °C.

Overview

EN 4041:2006 is a CEN (Aerospace series) standard that defines dimensions, loads and key characteristics for rigid single row ball bearings manufactured from corrosion‑resisting steel, with an extended inner ring and a flanged alignment bush. These bearings are intended for airframe fixed and moving elements and flight‑control linkages where only slow rotations and slight oscillations occur. The standard covers limits on temperature, lubrication, materials, surface finish, designation and marking.

Key topics and requirements

  • Bearing type and configuration: rigid single row ball bearings with either a solid or lightweight flanged alignment bush, and options for seals or shields. Bearings may be full‑complement (no retainer) where applicable.
  • Operating conditions: designed for slow rotation and slight oscillation only. Temperature range specified as −54 °C to 150 °C, with lubricant‑dependent limitations (see lubrication below).
  • Lubrication (per EN 3727):
    • Ester type very high pressure grease (code A): operating range −73 °C to 121 °C - when used, field of application limited to 121 °C.
    • Synthetic hydrocarbon very high pressure grease (code B): operating range −54 °C to 177 °C.
  • Dimensions, tolerances and loads: detailed numeric tables and figures specify bore/tolerance classes, clearances, runout limits, tilting and starting torques, masses and permissible static axial and radial loads for both bush types.
  • Materials and hardness: inner/outer rings and balls specified from aerospace steels with defined hardness ranges (raceways ≥ ~58 HRC in applicable cases); bush material options referenced to EN series steels.
  • Surface finish: raceways and balls Ra = 0.2 µm; bore and side faces Ra = 0.8 µm; other faces given up to Ra = 3.2 µm (values before surface treatment).
  • Designation and marking: standard provides model code format (example: EN4041A32PCT) and marking rules per EN 2424.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Aerospace OEM design engineers specifying bearings for airframe structure, hinges, actuators and flight‑control linkages.
  • Bearing manufacturers and suppliers producing corrosion‑resisting steel rolling elements to aerospace tolerances.
  • Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) teams ensuring correct replacement parts and compatible lubrication.
  • Certification and quality teams verifying compliance with aerospace materials, surface treatment and marking requirements.

Related standards

  • ISO 1132-1 - Rolling bearings - tolerances (terms and definitions).
  • ISO 8075 - Surface treatment of hardenable stainless steel parts.
  • EN 2424 - Marking of aerospace products.

EN 4041:2006 ensures consistent geometry, load capacity and material/finish requirements for airframe rolling bearings, helping designers and manufacturers deliver reliable, traceable components for safety‑critical aerospace applications.
