Overview
EN 12259-2:1999/A1:2001 (CEN) specifies requirements for the construction and performance of wet alarm valve assemblies and retard chambers used in automatic sprinkler and water spray systems. It is an amendment (A1, 2001) to EN 12259-2:1999 and forms part of the EN 12259 series covering components for fixed firefighting systems. Pressure data in this standard are expressed as gauge pressure in bar (bar = 100 000 Pa). Auxiliary components and attachments to wet alarm valve assemblies and retard chambers are not covered.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and intended use: Wet alarm valve assemblies for sprinkler and water spray systems in land-based buildings and structures.
- Design and performance: Minimum requirements addressing construction, clearances and dimensional criteria (illustrated in the standard), operational reliability and response characteristics.
- Retard chambers: Specific clauses for valves fitted with retard chambers including response delay and durability of that delay under service and fire exposure.
- Testing and conformity assessment:
- Initial type testing of all characteristics when first applying the standard or at changes in production method.
- Factory production control (FPC) obligations for manufacturers: documented procedures, inspections, testing and record keeping. An FPC system conforming to relevant parts of EN ISO 9000 / EN ISO 9001 is considered acceptable.
- CE marking and Construction Products Directive (CPD): Annex ZA maps clauses to CPD essential requirements. Wet alarm valve assemblies follow attestation system 1 (product certification), and CE marking must include information such as standard reference (EN 12259-2), product type, rated working pressure (bar), nominal size and pressure loss if > 0.2 bar.
- Documentation: Manufacturer declaration of conformity and certificate details required for CE marking.
Applications and users
This standard is intended for:
- Manufacturers of wet alarm valve assemblies and retard chambers (design, production, FPC).
- Specifiers, consultants and system designers who select components for sprinkler and water spray installations.
- Installers and commissioning engineers verifying conformity and documentation.
- Notified bodies and testing laboratories carrying out initial type testing and conformity assessment.
- Building owners and authorities needing assurance of product performance and CE compliance.

8 Evaluation of conformity
8.1 General
The compliance of a wet alarm valve assembly with the requirements of this standard shall be
demonstrated by:
- initial type testing
- factory production control by the manufacturer.
8.2 Initial type testing
Initial type testing shall be performed on first application of this standard. Tests previously performed in
accordance with the provisions of this standard (same product, same characteristic, test method, sampling
method and system of attestation of conformity) may be taken into account. In addition, initial type testing
shall be performed at the beginning of the production of a product type or at the beginning of a new
method of production (where these may affect the stated properties).
All characteristics given in clause 4, and where appropriate clause 5, shall be subject to initial type testing.
8.3 Factory production control (FPC)
The supplier shall establish, document and maintain an FPC system to ensure that the products placed on
the market conform with the stated performance characteristics.
The FPC system shall consist of procedures, regular inspections and tests and/or assessments and the
use of the results to control raw and other incoming materials or components, equipment, the production
process and the product. It shall be sufficiently detailed to ensure that the conformity of the product is
apparent, ensuring detection of irregularities at the earliest possible stage.
An FPC system conforming with the requirements of the relevant part(s) of EN ISO 9000, and made
specific to the requirements of this standard, shall be considered to satisfy the above requirements.
The results of inspections, tests or assessments requiring action shall be recorded, as shall any action
taken. The
